Italics...
If you're posting with MS Word, you can search for italics (and several other text treatments) and surround every use of italics with the HTML "Emphasis" (italics) tags, which function exactly like "fat" quotation marks.

P.S. Spacing...
...from the symptoms, I presume you're using MS Word, which uses many very silly default choices which only make sense if one lives inside the MS prison. I have a blog post on the subject, if you're interested.
