I'm re-watching the movie "Labyrinth", and it occurs to me how necessary it was that the protagonist be a girl. I mean, the whole movie only works because its a girl doing the adventure. What do you think?
Comments
never seen it
Is it any good?
I like it a lot
you might like the ballroom scene, as you girls like that kind of thing ....
Also, David Bowie
Dance, dance magic dance...
he's good, isnt he
he's kinda handsome .... wait, why am I looking at a guy?
Cause
Your a woman who likes men... so much so that your dreams are rather vivid...
its all your fault, Jaci!
stop making me so girly!
you take back your girl germs, this moment!
Wait what?
Your the one who infected me with girlie germs! How could I infect you when you infected me first?
Silly woman!
backwards as usual, bizzaro girl
it must be tough to be backwards all the time. You infected me, not the other way around !
Now get me out of these girly clothes before someone sees me!
Huh
What are you supposed to wear then girl? Mens clothes fit me better than they ever will you.
Now put on your bra like a good girl, your nipples are poking out.
oh and for the record I was a normal boy till I met you.
nobody believes that, Jaci
you were such a girly girl, it infected me!
and I dont wanna wear a bra, that's for girls like you !
how the...
Okay listen you girlie girl!
Enough of this! Put on your bra, unless of course you WANT men to stare at your boobs all day..
Anyways You were a girlie girl first your mom said so!
I win.
why would they stare at me?
when they would rather look at a pretty girl with hips like you ?
And my mom was just being nice
I could
wear a bag beside you and nobody would notice me.
nope, boys are flirting with you
they dont even notice me.
pfft
Dorothy Colleen Belion is a wonderful beautiful woman, an amazingly good author, and a girly friend.
backwards again!
Jaci is a wonderful beautiful woman, an amazingly good author, and a girly friend.
err.... not that I WANT boys to notice me
I want girls to notice me, and ask for my phone number....
we know
that you prefer boys and just look at other women in jealousy. No need to point that out.
Jaci, that's backwards!
I look at girls, I promise!
of course you do
How are you supposed to keep current with fashions if you don't look at what other women are wearing?
not like that!
I want to cuddle with a girl, and hold her, and call her Georgina ..
translation
You want to cuddle with a boy, and love him and hug him and call him George... which will have in about 10 months and Ill be the best man at your wedding.
no, that's what's gonna happen to you
in 10 months, you find a nice boy, and cuddle him, and love him and call him George.
oh
and you will have your surgery in 4 months.
I suppose I will find a girl to marry, with me as the groom.
You am Girly girl!
Me am manliest there is.
nope nope
you girliest one there is!
cant
be your the girliest there is.
no, that's definitely you
compared to you, I'm macho man
Ppplease!
Your so girly you make me look like Randy Savage.
you must get tired of being wrong sometimes
everyone knows you are more girly than me.
Chuckles like a guy
The only one wrong is you... just like always. Accept the truth your a GIRL!
you're the girl!
accept it!
I know that
your the girl!
shesh again you want to shout it out to me. I'm not deaf.
I know that Jaci is a girl
she's just so far into denial, she can see the Sphinx ....
Yep
Dorothy is in denial. I however am perfectly fine with myself as a guy
you? a guy?
Dottie pees herself laughing ....
oh great
Now you have to change out of your pink tights. your such a girl!
Boys like me can wear pants.
girls can wear pants too!
nice, pretty pants for when you go out with your boyfriend you keep telling me about - you keep saying "this manly man's doing this", and "this manly man is doing that" - so he must be very manly ...
what boyfriend
You have a boyfriend? He must like your girlie white and satin dress with pink lace trim.
so your boyfriend likes you girly, does he?
well, that shouldn't be hard for you....
of course
I'm manly what else would I be since im a guy?
Dottie busts a gut laughing
you couldnt be a guy if you tried.
Now, me, on the other hand, If I wanted to, I could pass a dude, no problem.
You cant
pass as a boy. It just doesnt work that way. Your more and more your girlie self.
Now me I can be a guy all the time.
I dont have a girly self !
just like you dont have a boy self
I know
You dont have a boy self. Your a woman.
why you feel the irrational need to argue this is beyond me
lets not forget
a young Jennifer Connelly before she grew into the Betty Page look in the rocketeer
one of the many "work" Movies for me
I call them work movies, because each time I start to watch them, Work calls me in, or it is on the T.V. and I am about to go to work. Labyrinth, the princess bride (cured now, got to see all of it and that curse doesn't work), Ferris Buller (finally bought it and watched it last year while unemployed, so no curse there anymore) And Spies like us. a bunch of other movies in that list that I don't recall now, but are ones that I couldn't tell you what happens after the first 10 minutes
Wrong
You could quite easily have a boy in there, you would first have to change it to the Goblin Queen, among other changes. It would have to be more heroic, and less romantic. Since the story is really about the changes and challenges of puberty, and becoming an adult (hence 13 o'clock which represents the age puberty usually starts) it could be changed to work for a male perspective as well.
The 'troll' she wasn't allowed to kiss, or she'd be 'banished to the realm of eternal stench' (which was made of butts farting) represented her little brother and her relationship to him.
She becomes wise enough to stop and look closely at a problem to find a simple solution instead of running around in circles (the endless maze)
She becomes smart enough to solve to doorknocker question.
She is confronted with peers that only want to have fun, and want to take her head off (mind altering drugs), and she doesn't join them.
She is tempted to keep all her comforting childhood things, and realizes she's outgrown them.
There are many more things, but I haven't seen it in over 2 decades, And can't remember any more.

So while it probably works BEST with a female lead, it could be done with a male. It just would be a VERY different movie.
Well, I JUST re-watched it myself...
And I have to disagree. ONE of the basic themes is the one you describe and COULD be done with a male lead, but it'd be so completely different that you really couldn't even recognize it as being inspired by Labyrinth.
There's also a second very major theme that really... Well, it could be done with a weak male character and a MILF. But that wouldn't make as captivating a story.
Abigail Drew.
I think...
A) I think you mean a naive male character and a Cougar, not weak/MILF. It's easy to mistake the two.
B) It still falls under the changes & challenges of puberty, and becoming an adult.
C) EVERY scene I listed could be done with a male character WITHOUT ANY change, I had already pointed out the need for a cougar character, and stated that it would be more heroic, less romantic, but you could make BASICALLY the same movie with a gender switch.
Oh! That Labyrinth!
I thought the original post was about the other one. Which I think is called "The Labyrinth". :)
Hugs,
Erin
