Over the last few days, I've watched one of my postings get over a dozen hits a day and for a four year-old piece, that's something - especially consistently, day after day.
Now, I don't want to put people off, stop them reading or sound like this is real sour grapes, but the post it's been happening to is my poem "The Writer". Over the last week, it's had well over a hundred hits, yet not one person who's read it left either a comment or Kudos.
I'm not upset, just curious as to why. I would have thought at least one of those readers from last week would have said, "I like it", "I don't like it", "I hate it", or here, let me click on this button and have a Kudos.
Nothing.
Should I be pleased that my old poem has been read so many times lately, or should I be upset because no-one's said anything either by comment or by clicking that button, meaning that in almost four years and over 1100 hits, I've not had one Kudos point for that post?
To those who read it over these last few days, thanks, but remember, a little pat on the back or constructive criticism goes a long way.
Just sayin'
Comments
No clue...
Mine tend to be restricted to the occasional hit by the spider/crawlers from Google/etc... (I can't imagine a human doing it.) The only exception is on the rare times when I get something publishable (or close enough to publish anyway)... Then a few older pieces get some hits.
That you've got an old piece getting that many hits is kinda special all by itself. Congrats!
BTW - I've heard some say they don't bother commenting on or clicking kudos on older pieces because ... And I've heard several reasons, but the gist is they don't think the authors cared.

I find that on
older pieces, I am usually reading, serials, that i just move on to the next chapter, alway hit the kudos. Lately though I have been reading stories with my Family, and they know how much I hurt when I see the numbers but no comments so I do as I wish to be treated and the more I read, the more I see how to get better I hope.
Maybe, writing more comments will help me not make some of my silly mistakes in my stories, though some of my posted comments are crazier than the fiction I write something I would really like to change. Though I do think I would find things rather boring

Nice that...
Nice that your family's interested in reading things (here) with you.
I've always said
Don't try to measure your popularity by hits, comments, or kudos. You can't compare them on a one-to-one basis. Occasionally I'll remember to check for new comments on my stories, but not always. Hits is a spurious number that means nothing, and kudos - well they were put in place long after my earlier stuff was posted, so pffffft. How you feel about them is your choice, just remember other people may not share your opinion on how to rank these measuring devices, so you're getting what THEY believe is right. YMMV

there's nowt so queer as folk. I've given up analysing; I'm just grateful. It's still a puzzle, though.

Kudos
I know this is a poem so what I say don't count but I usually take time to reread old chapters to refresh my memory when a new chapter shows up. The only issue with that is you can only hit the kudos button once. Rehits just fail since you already gave the story kudos.
re-hits on a story
Hi Nick,
I've noticed something similar and put it down to people coming back to re-read the chapters since my stories have a lot of behind the scenes stuff going going on. Just why that would be happening to a poem I don't know. I haven't posted any so I wouldn't have that insight.
One thing I have noticed though is that kudos and comments seem to occur within the first few days of my posting a chapter and after that it's simply a daily increase in hits.
Eh....... I've got bigger problems to concentrate on so I've just sort of accepted it.
By the way... How's France?

The Kudos/comment thing
Thank you all for your kind replies.
I am extremely grateful to all who read any of my posts and I know it may seem as if I am asking for comments or Kudos, but I was really just pointing out that we writers are a fickle bunch who thrive on validation for what we write.
I appreciate that comments and Kudos may not be important to all the people who write and post stories here or elsewhere, but for others it is and I was trying to raise awareness that reader feedback can be a real shot in the arm or pat on the back to authors, letting them know that their efforts are appreciated.
Thanks again.

I know
what you mean and feel. My family did not want me to post anymore because I would get so upset about the lack of acknowledgement. So We posted some last night and Jasmine gave me plenty of acknowledgement. The twins will not be reading that chapter though.
