First night this winter it actually got below freezing here and my furnace went out at 10 p.m. last night. I didn't get to sleep until the dog got under the covers with me about 2 a.m. because SHE was cold.
Got the repairman outside looking at it now, if it's an electrical problem, he should have it fixed soon. If it's the heat exchanger, well, that furnace is old enough to have run for president against John McCain. Third party ticket though, so no hope of winning.
Got to take Cuddles to her eye checkup in an hour, looking forward to the heater in the Nissan.

Be Glad You Weren't in Central Arkansas
The folks here went through a cold hell starting on Christmas night. Very heavy snow and ice took out power to hundreds of thousands. It took nearly a week to get power back to some. Our power was out for three days. Fortunately, we were not home. Items did not spoil in the freezer or fridge.

My little sister is in the Conway area, she stayed home for christmas instead of going to her son's In-laws that day. A tree branch missed her car in the driveway by two feet. Of course, down there the only reason it is such a problem is the lack of snowplows and sanders out on the roads. Up here in Mass, it would have just been a minor inconvienience.
I have experienced southern weather like that though. When I was stationed at Ft Campbell Ky it snowed a minimum of six inches every sunday for six weeks. Clarksville TN had no school for those six weeks. We, however, were spending time out in the field and I was at times (when off duty) driving in the passing lane on 41A passing all the non-drivers in the right lane. The passing lane was full of snow and the right lane was mostly clear and I was doing a better job of driving than the locals :)
Cold?
Woke up the other morning and it was 12F at 7 AM, then it got cold after that. Nice day today, only got down to 21F overnight.

Hate to sound unsympathetic, but...
Here in Western New York State we have been dumped on for the last two to three weeks. I have cleaned at least 6-10 inches of snow from my car at least 4 times in that space of time. Temps? Well, as low as 9F at night to no higher than 28F during the days. We've been tightly in the grasp of what's called "Lake Effect" where the moisture being blown over Lake Erie freezes, and then dumps on us as snow.
I do feel for those who lose power during these kinds of events, or get hurt by some non-driver in an accident caused by someone going WAY too fast for conditions though.
Here in WNY, we say that, "If you have more mileage on your snowmobile than you do on your 4 wheel drive truck... Well, you might be a Western New Yorker. We brush more snow off our coats than most folks shovel! LOL!
ON the serious side. Keep your wits about you when it snows. Be prepared with provisions and heavy clothing. Stay as dry as you can, and above all...If you Don't have to go out...DON'T! If you DO go out, have good snow tires on your car, and drive as if you were on glare ice. If you do lose power... if it's for a short time, hunker down and stay as warm as you can. If it stays off for more than 6-8 hours, get to somewhere warm.

There was one time, years ago
There was one time, years ago when I walked home from work. At that time, work was in Hancock Michigan, that's in the UP. I walked to South Range Michigan, about six miles away, but it was about -5f when I took off from work and I was freezing when I got home. Found the heater had shut off and was looking forward to grabbing a blanket and standing over the heating vent for heat.
Well luckily we got someone from the roommates family who knew how to work the stupid furnace. Was a cut off switch and it had tripped. I was heating up in no time and I think I fell asleep on the vent.

...I live in LoCal for crying out loud. :) No contest.
I thought it was funny that on the first genuinely cold-enough-to-cause-frost night this winter that that was when my heater decided to fail. And it is being a pain to repair because it is such an old furnace in a mobile home. Little single-speed 1/5 hp motor with a 3/8" drive shaft and I haven't been able to find one locally.

fill your bed with cats, like 20 of them and that will keep you warm at night. Well, the purring will keep you awake too, but warm

You live in an area where if the temp gets close to the 50's, the winter gear comes out :) Mean while, we would still have people running around in shorts and tee's...
Shorts and T-shirts
I have a friend in Michigan that still wears shorts and t-shirts when there is 2 feet of snow on the ground. Of course Erin is currently shivering at all this cold talk in her blog.

Erin, good luck with the heater fix. We are lucky that ours was replaced 4 years ago after a water main break flooded the basement. We're going to need it tonight - supposed to be -15F tonight.
