I went to pick up my daughter today, and stopped to grab a paper at a local convenience store.
Outside was a group of teens, and when I stepped out of my car one asked me if I was a girl or a guy.
I said, "What do you think?"
So another said, "He's a girl! Freak!"
And the boy who asked the original question said, "Lez!"
I just kept my head high, got my paper, and got out of there.

ok Ms Colleen the first doesn't know if you're a girl or a guy, the second sez you're girl n the third sez you're a lez which by deffinition is a girl so two n half out of three teens say you're a girl then I guess you must be a girl so I guess it would be only fair to respond by saying 'you're so right, I am a girl, thanks for noticing, you all have a nice day!' bet they'd be tongue tied n as for one mistakenly thinking you freak we all know you're pricelessk hugs k-jo

although under the same circumstances I have been less than circumspect. I have been known to challenge fools who choose to use that hateful word against me. Each time it has happened, the perpetrator fled, rather than face me, like the man they imagined themselves to be.
A great response came from some movie, the title of which I forget. "I'm more man than you'll ever be, and more woman than you'll ever get!"
Your mileage might vary, but I have also used that line to great effect. Despite my own responses though, I recommend caution. Discretion is ALWAYS the better part of valor. You have nothing to prove to the rest of the world. YOu know who you are, and what you are. The opinions of the rest of the world, especially the undereducated, social misanthropes and maladepts simply point out and multiply their ignorance.
Be careful, and be you, Dorothy. That's all you need to show to the rest of the world.

Is always the best thing to do. But I might have responded "That's Miz freak to you!". Then I would have taken care of my business and slowly and gracefully gotten the hell out of there! Although for awhile I would have said "OFFICER Freak" ninstead, then the most likely reaction would have been them beating a hasty retreat!

Do not take anything they say personally. # 1 they insult everyone the same way, in this country kids like this call every one they insult Homo or queer. # 2 takes one to know one. They have no values or understanding of what they are talking about, making them the freaks. #3 You are a well loved and respected person who has worked very hard and has challenged them selves in ways they could never hope to reach in there under achieving way of looking at life. If they were you for 20 min they would loose it. they are not that strong.
Do not put the values of other people ahead of your own values. They are not worth it.

What would I have done?
A lot depends upon the circumstances. I have been stopped by a lot of different groups and types of people whilst out dressed. Usually a smile coupled with a brief explanation gets me by. I've only felt seriously threatened a couple of times and fortunately there was a police presence close to hand in one instance (Though my abusive agressor couldn't see the two officers as they were behind him.) In the other instance I managed to reach the doors of the club in time for the bouncers (Who knew me well,) to loom defensively beside me so fortunately I've never actually suffered an attack. (As I've said before, I do not 'pass'!)
With younger kids, if they ask me why, I just explain ,'It's like Lady Gaga sings, You're on the right track baby, I was bo-orn this way!. This usually brings an understanding smile to their faces and we usually part on good terms with me having widened their education just a fraction more. (It's what I try to do.)
Those of you who read 'Bike', will have seen my comment monikers frequently and know I go abroad openly as a 'Tranny'. The more we are seen, the more commonplace we become and the less contentious we become; ipso facto, less abuse.

say something clever. Something that would confuse them long enough for me to get away. They probably wouldn't be worth a fight, regardless of the odds of winning or losing.
I am not a people person
So I would have just ignored them, like I do for most teens and children. Let's face it, I tend to ignore almost anyone who talks to me if I don't know them. The only time I talk to kids in front of a store is usually when they have Girl scout cookies.
