This link is to the blog of an acquaintance of mine, Mark Evanier, who writes the Groo comic book and the Garfield television show among many other things. Mark is a whiz at words and here he does a marvelous job of expressing part of what I mean when I say, give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

Hmm,
Sounds more like someone who has an evil twin, who rules when they are writing.
In this day of google translate it is not hard to get a clue. Funny story though.
Exactly the opposite
Giving the benefit of the doubt means making the most harmless assumptions; in other words, not positing hidden malice. And as someone who speaks multiple languages and has worked as a professional translator, I have to say that it's necessary to give Google translate the benefit of the doubt fairly frequently. :)

= Give everyone the benefit of the doubt because certainty is a fragile thing that can be shattered by one overlooked fact.
Perception is all
I totally agree. I had a big doozy of a misunderstanding about a blogpost of mine a while back here in BC, which I have called "The Case of the Disappearing Blog" - a good object lesson on what you just said about "not positing hidden malice."
But here's another one of mine which combines the difficulties encountered in translating foreign languages, the difficulties in using on-line translators, and the difficulties in understanding my tongue-in-cheek humor which has made some assume I was being too hard on my beloved Aunt Andrea.

Feeling that Aunt Andrea might indeed have taken my blog badly and she had mistaken the humor of that blog, I had contacted her immediately via YM and we had shared a laugh over it.  Thank goodness her sense of humor was in synch with mine. Or maybe she was just indulging me at the time...
Well, whatever the case, I agree with you. Perception is indeed all. Â I suppose it is up to us to deliberately skew our perceptions towards the positive, because we see what we want to see.
Yep . Give everyone the benefit of the doubt - a hard lesson to learn, but I am trying real hard. Â Hopefully, in the future, I will be able to put it to use more.
So... anyone want to borrow my rose-colored glasses?

Kinda relates to one of my favorite sayings,
Never attribute to malice when stupidity will suffice.
