Gone Away

by Joyce Melton

Gone away, gone away,
Over the mountain, behind the hill,
To a lost and lonely day
Across the river, beyond the rill
Gone Away, Gone away.

In the green dawn we will prosper and grow,
Loved and cherished in the soft morning glow,
All the long day through sunlight we share
The burdens we carry, our toil and our care.

Then evening comes and night follows soon,
Gone are the dainties we fancied at noon
We dwindle like candles, light falters and fails,
Our single hope lingers in stories and tales.

Gone away, gone away,
Over the mountain, behind the hill,
To a lost and lonely day
Across the river, beyond the rill
Gone Away, Gone away.

Springtime is golden 'neath flowering trees
Our stories begin with hope in the breeze
Our summer of glories, so bright and so blue
Sweet blossom of love, so soft and so true.

Autumn's tooth bites at the height of our pride
Fruits of our labor have frozen and died
Still, we are able till winter withers all,
Only peace we can hope will follow our fall.

Gone away, gone away,
Over the mountain, behind the hill,
To a lost and lonely day
Across the river, beyond the rill
Gone Away, Gone away.
