A song to sing with the sunrise...

What It's Not
by Joyce Melton

It’s not about you. (Pomp, pomp.)
It’s not about you. (Pomp, pomp.)
It's not what you hear. It's not what you fear.
It’s not about you. (Pomp, pomp.)

It’s not what you do. (Pomp, pomp.)
It’s not what you do. (Pomp, pomp.)
It’s not what you do. It’s not about you.
It’s not about you.

It’s not who you are. (Pomp, pomp.)
It’s not who you are. (Pomp, pomp.)
It’s not who you are. It’s not what you do.
It’s not about you. (Pomp, pomp.)

It’s not who you are. (Pomp, pomp.)
You’re not the star. (Pomp, pomp.)
It's not what you hear. It's not what you fear.
It’s not what you do. It’s not about you.

It’s not about me. (Pomp, pomp.)
It’s not about me. (Pomp, pomp.)
Despite what I see, it’s not about me.
It’s not about me. (Pomp, pomp.)

It’s not who I am. (Pomp, pomp.)
It’s not what I’ve done. (Pomp, pomp.)
Despite what I see, it’s not about me.
It’s not about me.

It is what it is. (Pomp, pomp.)
It's just what it is. (Pomp, pomp.)
It’s not who I am,
This thought makes me free.
It’s not what I’ve done,
It’s not about me.

Rule 3?

Daphne Xu's picture

Is this song about Rule 3? What tune are we to sing it to?

I notice the song goes on about what "it" is not about. But not much about what "it" is about. I was reminded of full-page ads for books on how to get rich. The ads would go on and on about what the method doesn't involve...

Rule three

Rule three it is. :) As to the tune, it has it's own tune. But the 'it' in the song is the same as the 'it' in "It's raining."

I was making breakfast this morning as the sun came up over a forest fire and I was singing this song.

DefdF,GG
EfgaF,FgaaB,
CdedE,FF

Lowercase letters are eighth notes, upper case are quarter notes, commas are eighth rests. The time changes from 3/4 to 4/4 and back. Other verses are variations with some of them in a minor key.

Hugs,
Erin

It's Raining

Well, in the phrase, "It's raining," we know what "it" is about, even if we don't know what "it" is.

If we're told, "It's not raining, it's not snowing, it's not sleeting, and it's not blowing," now we don't know what "it" is about, beyond the weather.

The sun rose

... over a forest fire.

Opening scene from a French movie I saw a long time ago: a couple people enter a building, then a parked car explodes next to the entrance.

I think that Calvin and Hobbes had a few wham panels.

A man walks into a bar. "Ow! Get this thing out of the way!" "Watch where you're going, idiot!"

Nice, what beat and tune do

Nice, what beat and tune do you have this song set for?

What "it" is actually about is,

Everything and nothing. "It" is about time beyond time. "It" is about making breakfast while watching a forest fire. "It" is definitely not about you, "it" is definitely not about me, "it" is definitely not about anything including everything. If you are more confused than ever, that is a good thing. This is an abstract poem about "it". "It" is an abstract word, meant to draw the individual's own comments. Nice work Erin.

"With confidence and forbearance, we will have the strength to move forward."
