Delphine's Lament

Delphine's Lament

I'm twenty something years old, and you're so cold, even though you've got a robe on
I hear your laugh and look up frowning at you, I want to run and run
Past the lawyer's table and the witness stand, look now, my life is dim
You looked at my rack and said I'm too small, and now my future is grim

I don't know why I can't be who I really am
But I know you're not sensitive of anything at all
Don't know if my transition is near or far away
But I know I had the worst day with you today

I'm so upset now and don't know how you could be so mean
I stand here crying and you hold my life and grab it today
And what I really want and need seems so far away
And they talk and they whisper behind me since they've forgotten my name

I don't know what I can trust anymore, you know
But I know you're laughing on the inside at me.
Don't know how long it's gonna take to feel okay
But I know I had the worst day with you today

I have an horrible lawyer, his weakness just ruined my case
Your Honor smiles on some but not me, and it seems like such a disgrace
I grew up knowing who I am, but now my choices are few
And I had the worst and breast day with you

There is a book I found from back when I was three
I think by Marlo Thomas...you know "Free To Be Me?"
It's the age of prejudice, bias and hate
And an stupid judicial system that determined my fate

And now I know why things don't work the right way
I know you were going to rule against me today,
And I depise you for your judgemental eyes.
For sitting back and wanting me to lose
And I didn't know if you knew, but it's my right to choose
Still I had the worst day with you today.
