The Sword of Damocles

Deirdre was in the kitchen fixing something to eat when she heard the front door slam open. Her eyes opened worriedly and she kept stirring her noodles. If it was David, she really hoped he wouldn’t come around the corner into their little kitchen/ dining room area. She preferred to hide from him. There was something going on with him and it made her nervous.

She could hear him stomping into the house, then the footsteps stopped. He heard the sound of David collapsing onto the couch. The TV barked into life. She heard the channel change until it stopped on some sort of sports game. She thought it was football. The wa of the house trembled with anticipation. Something was really bothering David and she figured that they were going to end up yelling at each other again. They had been fighting more lately over stupid things. She wondered what it would be about this time.

She finished cooking and ate what little of her ramen that she could. Her stomach was jumpy with the prospect of another argument. She cleaned up her dishes and put them in the drying rack. If she was lucky she could just make it back into her room and get back to working on her English paper. It was due tomorrow and she really didn’t need this. She took a deep breath in and blew it out slowly. She calmed down some and felt like she was ready to face her brother.

She rounded the corner and David was sitting on the couch looking disheveled. His hair was tousled and it looked as if he hadn’t shaved that morning. His eyes looked a little red as well, with his cheeks flushed. Deirdre wasn’t sure what was wrong but this was not a good sign. He was still wearing his leather jacket and she could smell the booze from where she was.

Deirdre tried to walk past. But David’s voice stopped her. “Why, John?”

Deirdre tensed. “Why what?”

“Why did you have to do this to us?” David’s voice was flat with some bitter undertones.

Deirdre paused and stood looking at David, who still watched the screen. “David, I didn’t try to do anything to anyone. I was just trying to be myself.”

“At the cost of all of us. How selfish can one person be?” David turned and faced Deirdre. She shrank against the wall under his gaze. His eyes were hard and a little bloodshot. David did not look good. Her heart began to race and her palms began sweating.

“You had to be your precious ‘self’. Did you ever think, even once, what the cost to the rest of us would be? Ever?”

“What do you want me to say, I’m sorry? Well, fine. I’m sorry David. I’m sorry my attempt at being happy has cost you. It wasn’t my plan.” She wiped her hands on her pants.

“What was your plan? To become something you’re not?” He sneered the last. His gaze was obviously disapproving. There was still an undercurrent of anger that seemed to be building, which worried Deirdre.

“David, this is what and who I am. I am not trying to lie to people.”

“Oh...so you tell everybody, look at me, I’m a little fairy. I was born with a penis but now I wear dresses. I’m a girl now.” David’s hands fluttered alongside as he mocked her.

“Asshole! That’s not true.” Deirdre’s fear was turning into anger. She moved from the safety of the wall a step towards her brother.

“Sure it is. You couldn’t handle being who you are so you decided to see if life would be better if you were something else. That’s chickenshit. My brother wasn’t that much of a chickenshit.”

“Do you think going through transition is easy? This is tough as hell. It takes all of my courage. I have been fighting to be myself David. Why don’t you understand?”

“Understand that you’re a coward? I already figured that out when you cut your wrists.”

“How is killing myself a cowardly act?”

“You were running from your problems instead of dealing with them. You copped out. Just like now.”

“Fine. I’ll give you suicide as a cop out, but this is not a copout. This is my life. I was ready to kill myself when I was not ready to deal with this. I lived and am now trying to become what I had been hiding from. What’s chickenshit about that?”

“Look at what you’ve become! A simpering shemale, pretending to be a girl. You are not my brother! My brother wouldn’t have done this to his family! I wish you had died, instead of this!”

What?

How can anyone be so blind; maybe david would be satisfied if Deirdre killed herself in front of him, what an ass.

Yeah, drunk asshats like

Yeah, drunk asshats like David can really make most anything more difficult, especially selfish asshats who haven't realized what is really going on with another person.

...how sad and painful. Disowned and really, cursed by her own brother. And how many here have heard this? How many hearts have been broken when they did the brave thing...the one brave thing and received scorn instead of welcome? This is painful beyond words, and I've never heard these words myself. I'd like to think that when I finally come out to my family that I'll be met with acceptance...this is frightening. Truly sad and compelling chapter. Thank you.

A Splintered Life - Chapter 8

Until David can address his anger, he will be a danger to his sister. Is there a hidden readon? Could David be jealous and be like his sister?

Whew, Deirdre is in danger

If not directly from her brother she's in danger of how he makes her feel. Hope she's decided that suicide isn't the answer and she calls on her new friends for support.

I think Megan might be

I think Megan might be helpful enough to get her past ugly words and suicide and work to keep Deirdre safe.

Where can she go?

I made a remark in chapter 7 that she shouldn't have been there as David was moving towards a confrontation!

You asked where could she go?

Let's look at this unemotionally:

a. Megan possibly, not sure of the strength of the relationship but a good temp bet?
b. Mum and Dad - shouldn't be a problem, sounds like they are understanding?
c. Support services, I'm not sure where she is but there are many services who support those who are having problems, and including TG's, some churches included, restraining orders via the law.
d. The university where she is attending usually have resources to assist in these events.

Deidre needs to get away from David, NOW!

If survival is high on the list! Arguing with him is a waste of time in his current mental condition, separation and time to sort the issues and then to be able to talk to David in a controlled environment if he really means anything to her is the way to go!

Good luck Deidre.

Arguing with David is not

Arguing with David is not going to do much at this point for anyone, but with skill born of being a sibling has dragged Deirdre into a fight. This is probably not a bright plan.

I have to agree here...

Andrea Lena's picture

....there is nothing in the previous chapters to indicate that David would harm her physically, but she is imperiled by his words of rejection. As stable as she has been, she has attempted to kill herself before, and there's certainly reason to be concerned. On the other hand, her mother is supportive and even her dad to some extent.

It's ironic, as Alison has noted that David's "courage" seems to have come from the bottle, when his sister is demonstrating courage against some difficult circumstances with a strength that comes from within. Hopefully she'll use all the help that is available, including new friends as well.

Disturbing

This is disturbingly realistic. The hint of compassion I saw in David in Chapter 1 seems totally missing. It may be the alcohol talking, seen that before. But this does not look good.

Well, here we have a place

Well, here we have a place where David has certainly wound himself enough to the point where he isn't so compassionate any more. And booze is not good for good conversation sometimes.

Poor Deirdre, she have got a

Poor Deirdre, she have got a brother who doesn't understand and also use too much alcohol. Maybe her transition was difficult for others too,but it is better for her to be real her than to play someone she isn't.

what happened to Estelle?

Transitions are difficult

Transitions are difficult for more than just the people going through them. They can cause a great deal of stress in families as they are trying to come to terms with a new person who they often feel like they don't know. We may see it a not much changing, but it is actually pretty huge and while it is better for her to be herself it isn't as if her family naturally sees this as an improvement.

Oh, Estelle was pretty much dumped as a friend when they moved away from where they had been living. Can you blame Deirdre?

He's drunk enough to no longer hold back his hatred and bigotry. His vitriol can now rise and stink up the room. Tomorrow when their father calls to talk to him the shit will surely hit the fan.

Maybe D will be allowed to get her own place, or her brother will leave.

Or in the brothers drunken rage ...

he will rape his sister/brother, possibly killing her and thus end up in prison some bigger man's bitch.

At this point your storyline has the potential to turn very dark.

A disturbingly realistic story, Heather. A brave effort

John in Wauwatosa

Thanks. Yeah, though there

Thanks.

Yeah, though there may be some truth in wine, that truth is not always pretty. David has bottled up a lot of things around this transition, like losing friends, personal embarrassment, anger, distrust, disappointment, misunderstanding, etc. Bottling things up can be a very bad thing if the pressure is upped, as things have a tendency to get explosive. That is kind of where things are right now, and that isn't good.

As for disturbingly realistic... tell me you are surprised?

Grog!!

ALISON

Why is it that some men(and women) get themselves full of
hooch and then think that they are 18 foot tall and bullet
proof??If David can't handle the situation he should be man
enough to walk away from something he doesn't or won't
understand.Instead he screws his 'courage' up with booze and
then wants to justify his percieved "macho" self.An old friend
of mine used to call it"anti fear juice"!!He wasn't wrong.

ALISON

I often see booze as a

I often see booze as a magnifier, with certain things having a tendency towards magnifying certain emotions. David is certainly upset with Deirdre and doesn't understand and the booze has only made that stronger. This is never a good thing.

There is a reason that alcohol is a drug.

Heather

Pity

David is such an ass. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

Some people can't or won't accept TG, it's not that strange. Just some sixty or seventy years ago TG's were considered insane and curable with all sorts of ingenious treatments like electroshocking, flogging, or what not, that they could think off in the asylums.

For a large group of people TG's are still mad as hatters, and to the majority of mankind we're considered not normal... Well, we're not! Normal, that is.

Up to now I consider this story a rather dark one, with a flicker of light with Megan and Mom, and it's a well told story. It draws you in, and I'm rooting for Deirdre that she'll be able to eventually reach her brother. With understanding and supportive parents, how come he's such a pig-headed bigot?

Thanks Heather.

Jo-Anne

I also see this story as a

I also see this story as a dark one, but we have a lot of dark stories in our community. All too often we try to brush them under the rug and to pretend that all is right with the world, at least in our fiction. We aren't normal, based off of societies view of things and we are defending ourselves so much that we often loose sight of that fact to a degree, just how not normal we are seen. The Other is often feared and this is something that David doesn't understand and kind of fears and like a moron he hasn't really talked to anyone about it. Fear is a dangerous thing. You can have supportive parents but that doesn't necessarily help you with something like this, when a combination of factors comes together.
