Dear Dottie,
Thanks for the link to that video. I thought it was very well done. I enjoyed it and think it would be very good to show to HS juniors and seniors, college students in general, etc.
Minor, minor criticisms:
It seemed that there was effort made to include everyone in the video's definitions and scope of the terms; sex, gender role, gender identity, and sexual preference. I think it is very complete for "western/developed nation" society, so it did what it was made for very well. I just thought if there were more references, descriptions and/or video of foreign, native and/or aboriginal cultures, the messages might be stronger. OTOH, bringing in variations of M or F gender roles (like African tribe[s] where the men wear make-up) and the various roles of the third sex in different cultures might confuse viewers or dilute the western culture examples.
I'm also not completely convinced that there are as many gender roles as there are people. The more conservative members of whatever culture probably live the gender role they were taught and that is traditional in that culture; they think their gender identity is one who follows the established gender role and is the biological sex associated with that gender role.
I'm not sure, but info and theories I know seem to indicate that someone nonconforming to hetero normative behavior also has a biological (brain and other) difference to the normal individual.
Hugs and Bright Blessings,
Renee
Thanks Dorothy
Thanks Dorothy. Very watchable.
Looking at the comments below the vid, here are one or two observations:
'Woman' originally meant wife (of a man)
'Girl' comes from an old German word meaning a child (of either sex)
'Boy' referred to a servant
'Female' is a corruption of the Latin femina via the French femme. It has no etymological connection with the word 'male'.
