Been thinking about fan fiction. Its a little like doing a cover of a song, you can either try and capture the original, or you can try and make it your own.

I've done a few fan fiction stories, and usually I try and honor the original pieces while adding my own touches to the universe in question.

I hope I've succeeded, but maybe someone who has read one of my pieces would be a better judge?

i've read

some really great fan fiction and some really bad stuff. then there the half and half stuff. like a Buffy/ Anita Blake story over on www.tthfanfic.org the author wrote and great Buffy story, had the character down pat, they made Asher 10 times the man he ever was, but Anita was handled so bad, the author did not understand her moral center, had her jealous of stuff she did not care about and the worst, tried to set her up to turn into Glory from 5th season BVS down line. I just can not see any way for Anita to become that blond, airhead fashinista. now I've enjoyed your stuff, an you get better all the time.

...I'd highly recommend, if there are any Back To The Future fans here, the work of Mary Jean Holmes at http://www.mj-holmes.com/BTTFfanfic.htm. She not only writes with the talent and discipline of a professional, she is able to cross the BTTF universe with those of "Ghostbusters," "Quantum Leap", and even "Hook" without the result degenerating into eye-rolling silliness. I read through her stories until I was in a bleary-eyed stupor, so unwilling was I to tear myself away from them.

I think a close second would be Kristen Sheley (note the single "l" in her name) at http://kristensheley.com. She is friends with, and was greatly influenced by, Mary Jean Holmes and has created and published a number of original stories as well.
