i have always had strange dreams.
Not only the night terrors I had for decades, but just plain odd dreams.
Well, last night, I had a doozy.
I dreamed that I was with a group of people being harassed by government officials when a group of tough looking men started attacking the group.
I got the idea of giving this one guy a drop-kick because I was on a platform and I figured i'd at least get his attention.
So I launched myself at him, kicked him in the face.
And I killed him.
The dream ended with me looking in shock at this person I had killed, repeating over and over again that it just wasn't possible for me to have done that ...

Sounds like my dreams
I qualify them as nightmares, but they lack the emotional content that makes them night terrors. Seems like my subconscious delight is giving scenarios where anything could go wrong, from being homeless to paralyzed in wheelchair for life to being attacked by police, and many more. It is almost like watching a documentary, except it is me. No fun at all, but it could be worse.

In my dreams, whenever I have to kick someone, my leg is going through molasses, has turned to lead, etc. Just as whenever it's critical that I shout out, my voice gets caught in my throat. And when I'm trying to run...
I've had the occasional type of dream I would have woken up screaming from when I was a child. My most recent that I recall: inside a huge room, crocodiles (or alligators) and huge King Cobras all coming at me.

When I was a little child
I would occasionally sleep on my stomach. What broke me was waking up and being paralyzed, knowing something in the room was going to get me. I would just lay there, terrified, until the paralysis broke and I could turn over and see nothing was there. Very scary.
The other dream (nightmare) I had at age 3 or so was falling down a well, surrounded by eyes in the wall. The eyes would come out on a stalk and chase me. I just knew something awful would happen if one touched me.
But then there were the flying dreams. Those were neat.

It is believed that you have flying dreams or falling dreams when you are at your most intense growing spurts :-)
Try this...
When lying in bed before sleep relax and concentrate on what kind of pleasant dream you will like to see.
When your concentrate on not seeing a nightmare - you will see a nightmare. Dreams search engine ignores no's and don't's.
Even simple thought of "I want to see a pleasant dream" works most of the time.
With experience you will be able to finetune kind of dream you will see, like will it be romantic comedy or mystery detective.
Sometimes it is possible to persuade dream provider to show next episode of particularly interesting dream. My personal best was about a 30 episode worth of ongoing dream with continuous storyline.
