Girls Lie Too
by Barbara Lynn Terry
Get up, David. There's a policeman at the door, and he says he needs to speak with you."
"Huh," I said sleepily, wondering why mother was waking me up.
"There's a policeman at the door, and he needs to talk to you."
"Why does he want to talk to me?"
"He wouldn't tell me, he just said he needs to speak with you."
My name is David, I am fourteen years old. I have below shoulder length light brown hair, sky blue eyes, and I am five foot, four inches tall. I couldn't figure out why the police wanted to talk to me, but I got out of bed, and got dressed in a kind of hurry. I brushed my hair, and put on a little mascara. I went downstairs to see why a policeman wanted to talk to me.
I went to the door, and he was standing just inside of it. "Hello officer, my name is David."
"David, somebody made a complaint against you for forced sexual activity. We want to know where you were last night between seven and nine o'clock."
"I was at my friend's house. I had to call my mother to come and pick me up."
"Where does this friend live?"
I gave him the address, and his phone number. The officer said he would be back to talk to me again, and I was not to leave the house until he did come back. I couldn't believe what he had said. What exactly did forced sexual activity mean? Well today was Saturday and I didn't have any plans anyway. So I went back upstairs and got a clean set of clothes out of my drawer. Today I decided against my lavender panties, because something told me it would not be a very good idea.
I went in the bathroom and took a shower, using mother's lavender perfumed soap. I used her lavender shampoo and her lavender conditioner. I made sure I washed my hair twice, and conditioned it twice. After I had rinsed off, and got dressed, I went down to get breakfast.
"David, what did you and Tommy do last night?"
"We played video games in his room until I called you. Then we sat in his living room and waited for you."
"Did you two go out at any time when you were there?"
"No mother. We just went to his room and played video games."
"All right, I will check that with Tommy's mother. I don't think there is anything to worry about. I hope."
"There shouldn't be mother, because all we did was play video games."
Just before lunch, the officer came back to the house. This time he had a lady with him.
"Hi David, this is Michelle, she is from child protective services. She is going to ask you some questions, while I talk with your mother. Is that all right?"
"Yes, that's fine."
"Good. Where can you two talk where we can't hear you?"
"In the kitchen. When the door is closed, you can't hear anyone talking in a normal voice."
"All right, Michelle, take David into the kitchen, and I will talk to his mother."
I went with the lady in to our kitchen, and we sat down at the table. She opened her case, and took out a pad of yellow paper. Then she wrote the date on it, and "discussion with David .... it is eleven thirty a.m."
"Now David, do you know a girl by the name of Sandra, that is in your class at school?"
"Yes I do."
"Okay, have you ever wanted to go steady with her, or have sex with her?"
"No ma'am."
"David, you are a normal, fourteen year old boy. Are you telling me that you have never dreamed of what it would be like to have sex with a girl?"
"No ma'am."
"But why?"
"Because ma'am, I'm transgendered, and my doctor says that I will be taking hormones until I'm eighteen, then we can go and I can have my surgeries completed. Sandra is a nice girl, what does she have to do with this?"
"She said you, well how can I put this, that you were in her bedroom last night between seven and nine o'clock, and that you made her, well, I guess there is no easy way to say this. She said you made her suck your penis."
My mouth opened wide, and I could feel the color go out of my cheeks. I couldn't believe that Sandra would say something like that. Especially about me, I had thought we were friends. But I guess not.
"Did I say something wrong, David?"
"I...I...I'm just...how could she say something like that? If I wanted sex with anyone it would be with a boy, not a girl. I mean I like girls as friends, but not for sex. That...that...it just isn't possible."
"I notice that you use perfumed soap. I like that lavender scent. Tell you what we will do. I will talk to your doctor, and I will talk to Tommy. We haven't had that chance yet. If we find that she is lying about you, she will be the one in trouble. David, I am glad that you were candid with me about your gender identity. That will be a very important part of my investigation."
"Why would she say something like that? I mean, true I'm not an angel, but I'm not, what I mean is, I don't go around forcing anything on anybody. If they don't like me for who I am, just say so, and I'll leave. It's as simple as that."
"Well David, to be honest with you, there are people in this world who would do anything to hurt a person like you. See, many believe that your gender identity is a choice. How long have you been wanting to be a girl?"
"Not wanting to, Michelle, needing to. I first knew something was different about me when I was about three years old."
"Now it's my turn to be incredulous. Three years old, David? Are you sure about the age?"
"Yes. The reason I remember is because that's when I started to remember the things that happen to me. I remember my three year old birthday party. All the kids from my day care came to my party. Even the teachers. That was a fun birthday party. Michelle, I really get hurt inisde everytime someone calls me a good boy, or a young man. I may have a male body, but that is where anything of a boy ends. I have always done everything a girl does, and maybe even more so."
"More so, David? I don't think I understand."
"Well, I have always felt I had to try harder at being the girl I am, because people either don't, or can't see the girl in me. So I have to try harder to make them see."
"And is that why you wanted Sandra to suck your penis, David. Because you wanted to see how it felt?"
"Ewwwwwwwwwwwww, that is just sick!!!! I would never want anyone to do that to me. Never!"
"All right David, I had to be sure. You answered my questions to my satisfaction. Now officer Daniels and I are going over and talk to Tommy, and his mother. If they back up what you have told me, then Sandra has a lot of explaining to do, and could get a ticket for lying to the police. One other thing David. Do you see a therapist?"
"Yes, it is required while I am in tranistion."
"What is the name of your therapist?"
"Jennelle Williams."
"Oh, I know Jennelle. I will be talking to her too. Now she is going to say that what you talk about is confidential, but when I explain you could be in a lot of legal trouble, I'm sure she will talk to me. But know this, that whatever Jennelle tells me will be in the strictest confidence. Is it all right if I talk to her, David?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Good. All right, I'm done here. Have a good day and good luck in your tranistion David. The way you answered my questions, the way you sit, and the way you use your hands when you get excited, tells me that you have nothing to worry about. But we had to check this out."
"All right."
I walked her to the door, where officer Daniels was waiting for her. She said something to him, I couldn't hear, and they both left. Mother and I went back in the kitchen to talk about what just went on.
"David, why would Sandra say you did something, when you didn't? I thougth she was your friend."
"I thought so too, mother. Anyway, Michelle is going to talk to Jennelle, Tommy and his mother, to see if what I said was true. Michelle did say that Sandra could get a ticket for lying to the police."
"Yes, she can." Just then the doorbell rang, and we both went to answer it.
"Well hello, Sandra, Mr. Wietz. Please, come in."
"David, Sandra has something she wants to say to you."
I sat on the couch, looking at Sandra. "David, I'm sorry I told the police those things about you. Jimmy said if I did, then they would put you in the nuthouse, because that's where...." She trailed off.
"Go ahead and tell him," her father urged.
"Well, he said that's where all faggots belong anyway."
"Sandra, how long have you known me?"
"Since kindergarten, David."
"Yes, and in that time, have you ever known me to be confused about who I am, or what I need to do to be a complete person?"
"No."
"Then why did you listen to Jimmy? Sandra, you have to tell the police the truth. Telling me isn't going to get this thing solved. If you are afraid that Jimmy will get back at you, don't be. Because Jimmy will be the one they lock up, and not in a nuthouse either. They will put him in the reformatory." Mother made an excuse, and got up and went in the kitchen.
"Mr. Wietz, Sandra, officer Daniels and the social worker are on their way back, and I was told for you to stay here until they come."
"Yes ma'am," Sandra said looking at the floor. "I'm sorry David."
"Now I am going upstairs and get dressed like I should be. These stupid clothes are going in the bin at the second hand store."
"David, you have to go to school as a boy, unless the doctor says different."
"Mother, Jennelle and I talked about that. She said all she needs is your approval and she will send the school my pyschological profile. Then she said, it is up to you too, if I can get my name changed, then there won't be any confusion as to who I am. And things like this we can avoid."
"David, if I have the court change your name to Susan Marie Kelly, that means you will have to go to school as a girl. How do you think you would get along with the others, if you did that?"
"Except for Jimmy, I don't have any problems, and I am sure that a few of my friends will help. Won't they Sandra?"
"Huh, oh yes, David, we certainly will."
"Anyway, I will be right back down. I need to get ready to meet our company."
I went upstairs and opened my closet door. I took out my rose/powder blue skirt set. I went to my dresser and got out a pair of tan, stay up thigh high stockings, my rose panty and bra set, and laid them on the bed. Then I got my black pumps with the two inch heels. I took off these scratchy, heavy boy things, and threw them in the corner by the dresser. After I was completely naked, I looked at my legs, underarms, and chest area. I didn't need any shaving today, so I sat on my bed, and put my bra and panty set on first. Then came my rose cami that was a part of the set, and my rose half slip. I put on my powder blue blouse, and then my skirt. I put eyeliner on my lids, and mascara on my lashes. I looked in the mirror, and put my hair up in a neat pony tail. I was ready for the day.
When officer Daniels and Michelle came back to the house to talk to Sandra, I was just coming down the stairs. Officer Daniels didn't recognize me.
"Young lady, go up and tell your brother we would like to talk to him."
There were giggles from all of us, and Sandra's father even laughed under his breath.
"What? Did I say something funny?"
"Officer Daniels," my mother said pointing to me. "This is my daughter Susan Marie Kelly. Susan say hi to officer Daniels. I said and curtsied.
"It is nice to meet you Susan, I'm Michelle, a social worker with CPS. I talked to your brother earlier, but I had no idea. You look fabulous."
"Thank you, ma'am." I went to sit down smoothing my skirt under me.
"Where is David?"
Michelle stood behind me, with her hands on my shoulders, and introduced me to officer Daniels. "David doesn't exist. This is Susan, whom you thought was David. She is the young lady I was telling you about on the way over here. Which is why I am filing my report the way I am."
"Okay, that's fine with me. I just didn't know a boy," I flinched, "could look like this."
"Officer Daniels, in my work, I come across a lot of transgendered, gay and lesbian, crossdressers, and even bisexuals. These are human beings, that want nothing more than to be accepted for who they really are. I must admit when I started this job some sixteen years ago, and I met my first gay person, I was shocked. But over the years I have come to realize that they want the same things in life that we do. When I had my talk with Susan in the kitchen, I came to realize that this poor girl has had to fight every single second of every single day to be recognized for who she is. As you can see officer Daniels, there is no visible traces of a boy here, she is a girl, with a birth defect."
"Officer Daniels," my mother cut in. "I know seeing her like this is quite a shock, but her therapist seems to think that she should be Susan full time. Well, she is supposed to be anyway because of her transition, but I was worried how she would be accepted at school. So I didn't force the full time thing on her. But I guess we will now."
"All right. Now, to get down to the business at hand here. Your name is Sandra Wietz?"
"Yes, sir."
"Why did you tell us that David...erm...Susan made you do something, he...erm...she would never think of in the first place?"
"I'm sorry about that sir. Jimmy Higgins told me that if I told the police it was David, that they would put David in a nuthouse. But I guess I did wrong, huh."
"To say the least, young lady. Now, did Jimmy force you to do what you accused David...erm...Susan of?"
"Yes, sir," she said sounding saddened.
"All right. Do you know where this Jimmy lives?"
"Yes, sir." She gave officer Daniels the address, and Michelle also wrote it down on her pad.
"All right, Michelle do you have anything further?"
"No. I would just like to tell Susan good luck, and welcome to womanhood young lady." She gave me a hug, and they both left.
"Susan, when Sandra told me what she had done, and why. I told her we needed to come over here. I saw David, and then all of a sudden there was this beautiful young lady in his place. You are a beautiful young lady, Susan, and never let anyone tell you different."
"I won't sir, and thank you very much."
"For what? Complimenting a beautiful young lady. No thanks is necessary. You just do one thing for me. You be the best girl you can be."
"Yes sir, thank you." With that Sandra and her father left.

Acceptance is a wonderful thing it is so sad that there is so little of it in the world.

Sndra's way of saying the reason ...
... for what she did ...
** "David, I'm sorry I told the police those things about you. Jimmy said if I did, then they would put you in the nuthouse, because that's where .... all faggots belong anyway. **
... makes it sound as though she thinks she did something good - like she went along with Jimmy's argument, believing, perhaps, that "the nuthouse" was where David could get the help he needed. Why didn't she say upfront that Jimmy forced her to do what she did?

BE a lady!
I agree with Jezzi
It didn't sound like she was forced to say those things about David, and it didn't sound like Jimmy forced her to do what happened. It sounded like she did it with mutual consent, and she thought David did belong in the nut house.
Some friend if that was the case.
You should rewrite it so she says she was forced to say that under threat of some punishment Jimmy would dish out if she didn't and that he forced her to have oral sex.
Sandra sure didn't sound like she hated David, and liked Susan, so it didn't make much sense in that respect.
Good story though, well written otherwise.

There's already an implied
There's already an implied threat. All Jimmy has to do is start talking about what Sandra did and her reputation at school would be ruined.
Sandra was only repeating
Sandra was only repeating what Jimmy said. It is a little disconnected because you are only getting the perspective from the Susan(David). Since it is only in the one perspective you never know what really happened In my mind Sandra was coerced into doing it by Jimmy in some way over a period of time. The biggest disconnection though is what made Sandra realize what she did was wrong as she feels the guild but doesn't seem comprehend the possible outcomes. Then they are only 14 so that is also not unbelievable especially since Sandra seems to be a little younger in the maturity level from what little is said and seen about her. This would also make it easier for her to be manipulated.
Thank you
all for your kind comments. I got the idea for this story from a gay cop that told me a similar story. I embellished a little for creative license, but the story is very accurate. Of course the names were changed, and you will also notice there is no geographical location mentioned. Essentially this is a true story. Anyway thank you all for your wonderful comments.

I'm Puzzled
While the story was nice, what was Sandra's motivation for lying? What hold did Jimmy have over her? And she must have known there would be trouble taking such a story to the police. In fact, in Britain or Australia, she might have been the one in trouble as David was also under age and a court could have determined that she led him on,
Joanne
I am aware
that in Australia she would have been the one in trouble, but maybe not, because she is also under age. The gay cop I mentioned is from one of the states in Australia. I lived there for 8½ months this past year. So I know. But I also know that Jimmy was in a lot of trouble, because the police even said he was put in juvenile detention after his court hearing. From what I understood, Jimmy was notorious for starting trouble. Like I said this is essentially a true story, I just used a little creative license, but I won't say where. If I were to continue this story, the second part would be purely fiction, and that in my opinion would ruin the story. But thank you all again for your comments. They are very much appreciated.

A World Where Justice Prevails
I enjoyed this story very much, but perhaps for different reasons than others. This kind of world, where policemen have the time to talk to people and sort things out and, yes, even listen to transsexual kids, is the way I envision a world in which I would enjoy living.
Here parents have the same last name as all their children, they understand their kids but hold them accountable, they attend PTA meetings and are generally focused on supporting one another. Law enforcment follows through and most of all, familes and friendships ultimately endure forever. Families show up for Thanksgiving dinner without histrionics or Ativan and are grateful for one another. This is a pretty nice world!
Blame it on the Warren Court of the 60's if you want (Escobedo, Miranda, et al,) but the real problem we ran into was being selfish. We lost sense of justice and fairness along the way and started searching for special legal rights and license. Maybe THIS kind of thinking really does belong in the nuthouse!
The part I liked best was that Susan felt obligated to act like a polite young woman. It just seems so strange to see it in the world we have today. Everyone seemingly feels the right to do anything.
Well done!
Love may be all we need, but many of us only know it by its shadow.
Touched my heart
Thank you for a wonderful journey that while probably fiction, has a good share of fact, that makes it really hit home. When Susan's mother said that Susan was a girl with a birth defect, I think that is the best way to describe being transsexual, anything else comes up short.
I am not surprised by what Jimmy said or did. Ignorance and fear often translate into cruelty. We condemn what we don't understand or is different. I'm sure he wasn't the only kid at school who realized David was quite different as from his effeminate discription it was obvious he didn't much look like a boy, and considering how he felt, I doubt he acted much like the typical boy either. I'm sure that when some of the kids told their parents about "David" they got loads of negative reinforcemnt of that "crazy faggot" stereotype. Hopefully some of the kids will know better, because perhaps their parents taught them better.
As for Sandra, I was disappointed in her for making that false claim, but as pointed out by others, she was probably under a lot of pressure from Jimmy and maybe her other peers. Perhaps she didn't talk to her parents about David's situation, or perhaps if she did in some way believe his transsexualness was illness, that maybe he would get help at a hospital (I'm not very confident in that motivation though because she said nuthouse)
No matter why she did, something wonderful came from it all. We tossed David in the rubbish bin and today was the first day of school for Susan and the rest of her life.
Thank you for a warm and wonderful offering that will make others think and made me smile.
Hugs and love MaggietheKitten
No pass
"Now, did Jimmy force you to do what you accused David...erm...Susan of?"
"Yes, sir," she said sounding saddened."
Sounds like sexual assualt to me. Don't much care what his parents and friends said about David, this is a felony charge where I come from. Outta be good for at least 10-15 years in prison, less if he pleads out.

Hi Karen J
Just for your information, sexual assault in any state in Australia is a felony too. But the police investigate, they just don't arrest without evidence like they do here in the states. The mention of the "nuthouse" was pre John Howard, who when he became Australia's prime minister, closed down all the mental institutions in that country, saying they were unnecessary. He left open a few mental wards in the community hospitals, but the mental institutions as such were closed.
This story was told to me by an Australian police officer when I went to Supa Summa (Australia's way of saying Super Summer). The police, state police, and federal police had information tents, and I went over and talked to them. That was when this older officer told me this story.
Now like I said, the names were changed, and there is no geographical location mentioned for anonymity. I said too much already by mentioning Australia, but I just want everyone to know that in Australia before they make a felony arrest, they investigate to get the evidence first, then they go for a warrant.
I wish the police would do that here in the states.
Be strong, because it is in our strength that we can heal.

Taking It at Face Value
I don't know what the laws are in this case. I'll just accept the story as written.
I liked the story a lot. I like Susan. She seems very well adjusted at such a young age. It speaks well of how she was raised and who her friends are. :)
Thanks for the story.
