Preparing for Battle

Okay! The explanation for sending out the energy grubbing spheres makes sense enough. Good. :)

I really like how Dawn helped Jason dismantle and untangle his crazy shielding. It sounded like magical OCD. Poor kid. At least he's got a handle on it now. Things are looking good.

Officer Tom is a fun character. He makes someone nice to relate to in this story. I'm sure I'd have some similar reactions if I met someone like Dawn. I like to think I'd be more open-minded but I won't lie to myself that I wouldn't have problems accepting it.

Thanks for the chapter. Only one more to go before the new chapters begin. Yay! :)

Really enjoying this

I am really enjoying this story, having taken a peak at chapter 9 elsewhere. I'm on tender hooks waiting for chapter 10 and beyond now.

You are a fantastic story teller - I'd be happy to have this on my bookshelf.

What If Officer Tom

Has a special mission that involves Dawn and the children?

Um great story so far, but I

Um great story so far, but I really hope you don't use Jason as the sacrifical dude. That would be really really... well, not good in a story with three girls and one guy. To know my own dead would drive me nuts. That's... well, I really hope that Guardian power is less perfect than they think.

Dawn pulls the mysterious wizard act on Tom and then she wonders why most people dislike magic. Apparently you have to be a 'chosen one' and somehow come to the right conclusions, which somehow allow you access to the magics of your superior soul. Or that's what I've gathered so far.

Thank you for writing this captivating story,
Beyogi

chosen one

It doesn't take pre-destination (chosen one status) to access magick... but it IS often a catch-22 situation. Most people only learn to use magick after experiencing it in some significant fashion. The simple truth is, belief and willpower are critical aspects in both the use of it... and in stopping the use of it. Reality as we understand it is mostly a matter of perception. Consider, for instance, an orange. This fruit defines a major color for us... in fact, it's a secondary color. When someone brings up the name of this fruit; you have a very clear understanding of what color it is going to be. Optimally, it's going to be an exact mixture of red and yellow. But here's the thing. We see objects based on the wavelengths of light remaining after the object has absorbed all the other ranges. So a black object is one that reflects nothing (it absorbs all of it). A white object reflects everything (absorbing none). An orange object, however, isn't one that absorbs the orange wavelengths... or the red and yellow ones... it is, in fact, an object that REFLECTS the orange wavelengths and absorbs everything else: red, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet... we're not seeing any of what the surface of an orange looks like, just the resulting pattern of refracted and reflected light leftover in the wavelengths that weren't absorbed.

And yet, for those of us who have seen an orange; there's no question about what one looks like when we use the word. I suspect only the blind understand how fragile that 'reality' really is.

Magick follows rules... except when it doesn't. It follows intent, except when it just happens. It's always an act of free will, except when it is driven by karma. Most often, it's a difficult road with little result seen even in the greatest working... because ultimately, the best workings do the least harm in accomplishing their goal. That's why working under the rules of white magick is considered 'weak' ... because the goal is to cause no harm while striving to improve some aspect of someone's life. Because an improvement in one person's life rarely comes without a cost to someone else, you can see how much challenge such an action would be. Taking the dark path is far simpler... if you don't care who you hurt, it's simple enough to take what you want from someone else.
