Trump at times seems to have the attention span of a Goldfish with ADD. The only thing he seems to be able to ever focus on for extreme long periods is his vendettas and quest for revenge over perceived slights.

Hugs Polly, give it some serious thought hon. First, we can't afford to buy Canada, the U.S. is so far in debt we are bankrupt. Second, Canada is super rich in timber, gold, diamond mining, and oil. All you guys need is decent leadership to be one of the richest nations in the world. It is one of the richest in natural resources. The only mistake you guys made was electing an idiot to be Prime Minister.

By the way, that would not be the 51 stats. That would be the 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62 and 63 states. 10 provinces and 3 territories.

A lot of people complain about him but he was the best candidate for the job. The other party leaders are way worse than him.

The good thing about Trudeau is he stuck to his promises. When he said he would do something he did it, whether we liked it or not.

Canada does not want to be a part of the us. The last time the United States tried an incursion into Canada we took over the White House. We don’t fight fair or follow war rule books.

Canada also supplies the wheat that is used to make your breads taste good. Manitoba and Saskatchewan supply a huge portion of wheat to the world at large because our wheat and soil produce a better tasting bread. You can google it if you want and there is plenty of daily bread films about it as well.

And I can assure you if Canada was let to it’s own devices we would change the face of warfare again.

Canada wasn’t a country yet - it was still an English colony, so Canada did not “take over the White House”. The British invaded up the Potomac River and burned the White House.

Canada did not exist prior to 1867, when The British North America Act united three separate colonies, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada to create a single country known as Canada. Also, it wasn’t until The Constitution Act of 1982 ended Canadian dependence on the Parliament of Westchester that it truly became independent.

If we are going to throw stones here, let’s make sure they are accurate.

The United States won it’s independence from England in 1783. Yes, we declared our independence in 1776 with The Declaration of Independence, but we fought a war with England for that independence which ended with a peace treaty in 1783. So you could say that our independence was not official until that treaty was signed. That still makes us almost 200 years older as an independent country.

The War of 1812, which was fought between the US and Great Britain had multiple causes, and yes, it did actually include an invasion of Canada in the area which was known as the Niagara Frontier, was fairly inconclusive. The causes usually brought up include British impression of American sailors, as well as British refusal to recognize American neutrality and British interference with American trade - but there were others as well. Namely, westward expansion of the United States, British and US relations with American Native Peoples, and territorial control of North America.

Although the end result of the war was mostly inconclusive, it did have several definitive results. It established a firm US-Canadian boundary, it pushed back the Native People’s frontier opening up westward expansion for the US, and it also increased the breach between the United States and the British North American Colonies.

Also, as for the comment about “change the face of warfare again”, let’s look at one fact:

Total size of US Military………………. 1.4 million active duty
Total size of Canadian Military……….. 67.4 thousand active duty, roughly 5% the size of the US Military.

And don’t even get me started on the fact that the United States is the largest arms dealer in the world………

Having cleared that up, I would say we all know that Trump is an idiot who cannot stay focused on any one topic for more than a short time, who cannot seem to understand that people (including him) are ruled by laws such as the Constitution of the United States, and who also seems to think that he is a lot smarter than he really is. The scary part is that there are enough stupid people in this country, and others, who listen to him and agree with his insane comments - irregardless of facts. Unfortunately, Trump has already shown the world how he admires dictators like Putin who seem to think that might makes right; let’s just hope that there are enough adults in the government to keep him from deciding he can pull a Putin and simply send troops into Greenland, or anywhere else.

I’m not gonna get into an argument but your history is off. Might want to look into Fargo and Detroit’s history a bit more. Or better yet a local one for me is Louis reil. The red river colony aka earl of selkirk of scotlands colony now named selkirk Manitoba. Our naming in Manitoba isn’t hard to figure out. Louis riel is either a local hero, rebel, traitor, or first premier depending on the flavour of the decade.

But for clarification the dominion of Canada was established in the mid 1800s. The country of Canada didn’t exist till 1969. And we are still part of the British commonwealth. Aka ROYAL canadian airforce etc etc. but for all intents and purposes Canada was its own country from about 1700 when it was consolidated British and French colonies that neither wanted to rule over anymore since they were busy with the rebels down south. Would have been nice to have more support of some type but we made do.

As for our military and navy…let’s just say that none of them are advertised to youth as possible careers or on tv more than once a year. It is kind of sad really. They really should advertise so young people know about them.

I admire your predictive power, Polly! I never expected it at all.

Not that I believe it could ever happen!

The process of achieving statehood has nothing at all to do with the president. He can wish, he can whine, he can fuss, and he can bluster, but it's not within his power to admit a state to the union, or to create a state where the population doesn't want it.

There's a part of the US Constitution that defines the process, and it begins with the inhabitants of the area expressing their desire for statehood by a referendum. That's only the first step, and I don't see it happening.

When I wrote 'Sissygeddon', which features an unnamed US preseident (but he's manipulated by Putin, he has small hands and he's utterly venal...) I hid behind the fact that he was said to be a President in his second term. (Presidents can get a bit weird, once they know they can't be reelected, and they begin to ponder the dreaded word 'legacy'...)

Turns out I was prophetic, I suppose. Oh well, brace y'selves... this could get crunchy.

None of those can happen. The 22nd ammendment prohibits the President from serving more than two terms. The Republicans should know it well as they pushed it through because FDR served more than two.

Also, article 2, section 1, clause 5, states “No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President.”

Elon Musk does not meet this requirement.

In order to repeal an ammendment, both houses of Congress must approve the change by a 2/3 majority, and it must then be ratified or approved by no less than 3/4 of the states.

There are currently six unratified amendments - that should illustrate how difficult this process is.

I believe the Russian Constitution had a similar limitation but that hasn't stopped Putin.

Just to stir the pot

In Russia there were several steps, all perfectly legal given the constitutions in force at the time. It was the elections to their parliament that were fixed. More difficult in the US given the distributed system.

However. another template to use could be the Bolivian one. Their constitution had a term limit. A referendum failed to give support for a change. Then the supreme court entered and declared the term limit unconstitional and invalid.

I am IN the United States and right now the um states do not seem so united. His election the second time around was a great surprise to me. Some people I know thought the alternative um just wasn't.

There is a literary passage... "If the ways of the people are not pleasing, they will be sent a bad leader." Holding my breath...

I really wish I could whisper him away

The trouble with constitutional limits is that they only work if everyone believes in them. If enough of the Supreme Court, the armed forces, the three letter agencies and various law enforcement bodies either accept that a Trump executive order is legal or at least are not prepared to act to block it then the Constitution is a dead letter. Remember, the Constitution is what the Supreme Court says it is and plenty of Americans have suffered over the years, legally or under colour of law for exercising what we would now say are constitutional rights to vote or to free speech.
Furthermore, having got away with no real consequences before, Trump has every incentive to go long. I think and hope the boundaries will hold, especially given Trump's age and mayfly level attention span, but I wouldn't bet anything on it which I couldn't afford to lose
