Bob and I have spent a very nerve-wracking four hours trying to keep the Search function from killing the servers.
Finally, in order to keep things working, we've had to set it up so the search is disabled when there are more than 140 users on the site. We tried 160 and that did not work. If not for the server blowing a tire around 2:15 my time this afternoon, we might have had over 15,000 visitors today.
When we get moved to the new server, we're going to try to set things up so the searches are done on a different machine; there are a couple of ways to do that.
No school Thursday so that day or Friday, I will take the new new server to LA to install it. Then sometime between Friday and Tuesday, we will make the change over to the new Quad server and let it run for a few days under the same setup were using now to sort of benchmark things. If all goes well, we'll try improving service a bit at a time, including moving search functions off of the main server.
Good luck to us all!
Hugs,
Erin

Thanks for the Status Update
I'm guessing configuration and initial running of the new server has gone fine. I hope all goes well with the switchover. It's just incredible that the old new server has been overloaded so quickly.
That's what happens
... when you have 40% growth one month followed by 12% growth per month for three months following. :)
Today was the first time the new server actually quit on us from the load. We were down for 25 minutes and abominably slow for more than two hours. The old server used to quit ten or twelve times a week. Once it quit twenty times in one day!

Erin

That's Cool Erin, But One Question
Will you put Classic Big Closet on a new server? I know that it's been disabled due to spam. Wondering if it would function if on this server.

Classic has been back for a week or two

Spammers can't corrupt it now since it has been frozen in amber - uh, static pages. :)

Sometimes, the simple solutions are the best solutions.
Database
Are you putting the database on the quad core, or are you giving it its own server?
(just curious)

On the quad to begin with
Later, we'll see.
