It may be
that it is possible that you do not know how to surf the internet today protected. I am saying this based on your 15 year history with the internet, In that time I have lost only 1 pc. and surfed protected for 14 of those 15 years. I am not being cruel, but I am advising you to get with someone in your neighborhood that knows something about surfing the internet and contacting them.
I recommend using ESET, FLOORP, STANDS, ADblock Unlimited, GHOSTERY, NuMAtrix, and more from the Mozilla Platform of Extensions. I have over 12 adblocking extensions. Do not use Chrome and the chrome webstore. It is unsafe since they disabled the backbone of adblocking.

Trouble shooting
I recently spent most of a day without internet. I called my local provider (Zipply) Their customer service person was quite competent; looked at their connections and assured me that all was right on their end. I explained that I had done the trouble shooting routine (Win 10) and got the error that said the server was not responding. I had unplugged my modem (I have no idea how to reset the thing and it's behind my TV stand so unplugging it is how I reset it) and plugged it back in. The indicator lights on it said it was properly connected. But Zipply reset it from their end and still no internet.
We made a service appointment for the next day and ended the call. I then got a wild hair and reset my router even though the trouble shooter said it was fine. Voilà internet. I cancelled my appointment.
Lesson learned. Reset everything even if it's working fine as is.

Internet Iffy
I hear from everybody around that internet service has been iffy. Discounting the known problems, such as the solar storms and the like, (wireless service during rush hour sucks), there have still been connectivity issues. BC has recurring issues, often with Cloudflare according to the messages I receive. Creditcard terminals in stores can drag, and chains that have a central processing system are slow quite often.

It is a little known trait
of almost all modern electronics that they detect the age of the user and increase the complexity of operation when they detect seniors. If you don't believe me ask anyone over 70 years old. Also, all controls are shrunk to near invisibility.
Probability of Equipment Problems
The likelihood of a piece of equipment failing is known to be inversely proportional to the distance to the service personnel.
Many years ago, I was the system's programmer for a development machine (IBM 4331 running DOS/VSE) being used to create a financial services application. My go to move when I had problems was to reboot the system.

Reboot
The last 26 years of my working life were spent performing computer support. I found that half of all problems could be resolved by a reboot. The means, of course, that we would never know the cause of the original problem, but getting the customer back working was always the priority.
That left the remaining half of all problems to be resolved the hard way.
The other half
The other half of the problems is made worse by reboot. ;-)
