Blog About:
I expected several of the contest winners to donate their prizes to Big Closet.
This has been a BC tradition.
I was not prepared for double-digit participation in giving. This occurred without solicitation.
It appears our community is as strong as ever.
Thank you!
Jill

Surprised?
Not me.

Donations
Twenty years ago I created a non-profit to generate fundraising for our local school district.
That organization has taken in $8 million in donations. Yet, I never take generosity for granted.
Yes, I was surprised.

BC is worth it
I was humbled that I was selected, and was more than glad to give back to BC. The blog that you posted - 'Storywriting Guidelines I Use' and the comments that were posted to it by other writers were priceless. Thank you for caring for us so much. :DD TAF

So Many People Helped Me
When I first came to BC l came from writing on some other sites that were toxic.
I soon found st least a half dozen BC mentors.
Erin created an environment where nurturing is a daily occurrence.

while I could have used the money
I need this place to continue more.
"Need this place" ...
Community.
Needing Community is probably hard-wired into our species.
Drop in a phrase for 'X':
People who X simply do better all around - health, longevity, happiness ...
The phrases: are married; are Guardians for their Companion animals; have a sense of Community; (let's toss in) a Purpose.
I'm vegan, and when my former 'buddhist' 'sangha' went down in the flames of a chicken BBQ ...
I can't reconcile a killing a chicken for one's meal-plate with the Precepts of 'refrain from taking life' and 'do not take what is not given'.
---
So, I needed a place. I found zero vegan sanghas in Chicago that were close enough to 'sit' with, and mostly in English.
And, I'm a flaming atheist, both now and possibly 'afterwards'. That ruled out all the religious places, even the "God-lite' Unitarian-Universalists.
Landed on the Humanists. To all appearances, there is roughly zero concern for animals, so I can stay and ignore the fact carrion, teat-squeeze and bird butt-droppings will be served during the social hour ...
---
Gotta run. Need to pick up some non-dairy creamer, guac and hummus for social hour.
wonderful
This have been a great place for along time for even those of us who are not writers. its a wonderful place to escape when life get too heavy and the friendships that have developed here are worth so much to each of us .
The Trevor Project
I asked for my $50 to be donated to The Trevor Project. According to my US friends they're a decent national charity helping LGBTQ+ youth (support groups, counselling, hotlines, etc.) Especially in suicide prevention.
If you're posting this now I figure everyone must have messaged someone about what to do with their winnings. I didn't want to mention it before then (and didn't know if I ever would) because the winner's prize is their own. If you need or simply want the money take it. It's a writing competition and you won a prize, it's yours. There's nothing wrong with that. I know many people on this site are, at least, "comfortable." I'm sure many aren't either. There's not even a hint of shame in collecting a prize you won for your efforts. It's what everyone knew going in.
This realization makes it perfect.
This was one big whopping success. Don't you just love it when everybody wins!!! This contest just proves what a fantastic source we all have here. Long may she reign.

My Writing
I write because I need to. BC gives me a platform.

Where were the winners announced?
I must have missed it, but I've searched around and I'm none the wiser.
Who won, this year?

We posted it as a solo on the stories page so that more people would see it, and Erin is kindly keeping it up towards the top of the page for a week. Sorry for the confusion!
