For the next week, Melanie and I will be on the road, going back to Arkansas to get her things to complete her move to California. That's three days each way, with maybe a day there to pack things and maybe short sightseeing detours.
This is going to cost about $1500 ($400-600 for rooms, $300-500 for meals, and $300-400 for gas). We've budgeted this, but it is going to be tight. It would be nice if we had a bit extra in the BC kitty to cover this.

Melanie being here has been a big boost for me and the site for the last ten weeks or so and I want this to be permanent but there are things she needs from Arkansas. It's bit of a drive (about 3000 miles round trip) but this is really the surest, safest and ultimately cheapest way to do this. We will have laptops with us and will be doing most of the same things we do everyday, writing, posting, maintaining the site and chatting on Discord and Skype.

Arkensas to California
I suspect the best way to drive from California to Arkansas and back is to use Interstate 40 from California to Tulsa and then Interstate 44 from Tulsa to Arkansas, and back the same way. This route parallels or replaces US 66. I-40 passes though Elk City, Oklahoma, the home of BarbieLee. I'll leave it to you to know the best way from your home to Barstow.

From here we'll go to Desert Center then there to Kingman to pick up I40. :) Going to Barstow would be a side jaunt west to go north. And I 40 gets close enough to Heber Springs not to need I 44.
My family drove these routes every year or sometimes more often. :)

Desert Center
Interesting to hear of Desert Center. It was the origin location of what eventually became Kaiser Permanente, from which I retired almost a decade ago.
Kingman reminds me that I stayed a night there years ago. I was amused to see that one of the main streets in town was Andy Devine Ave. You and I are old enough to remember Andy in many western movies.
