my mom accidently called me "Dorothy" in front of my ex, and she threw a fit saying she didn't know anybody named Dorothy, that my birth name was the name given me by God, and I came really close to stopping the car and telling her to walk to the grocery store.

Ummm, I'd say that's a bit of a stretch. I can see that some people could say that gender is given by God, (but that doesn't jibe with my theology) but I'm pretty sure your parents gave you your birth name.
Someday I'll get around to finishing "My Personal Theology Regarding Transgender".

Some people feel authorized to speak for God
because they know He agrees with them on everything.
He must, because He's never actually voiced any disagreement.
Back in the 1970's during the debate over adopting the metric system
one US Senator fighting against abandoning our English-style systems of measurement
insisted that using feet + inches was something God decreed when he made the universe!
(and here always I thought that was cubits...). Hang in there Hon, and please don't listen
to righteous self-appointed mouthpieces for the Divine. They're no more of an authority on
Scriptures or God's will or what He (she?) thinks of Dorothy than you are.
I know I'm not, which is probably why I remain agnostic.
For me humility lies in knowing what I don't know...

Who the hell is she to think that she knows what your "God-given name" is. I'm pretty sure our parents are the ones who name us. When she's created her own damn universe then, and only then, can she claim to speak for the divine. I personally believe that the creator is female, but I don't see Her ever being a woman like that. Your ex is stupid and intolerant woman Dot, and she takes advantage of your kindness without showing any of her own. People like that aren't worth listening to hon, too full of themselves to see the value of others. You're worth a million of her.
