Elagabalus

Elagabalus is interesting. Unfortunately, we don’t really have any other sources other than what other romans wrote about him, and even by the standards of the time, the Romans were notoriously conservative. According to said Romans, he did all manner of scandelous things; he is said to have had sex with various men for money within the imperial palace, he was said to be insane (although honestly, the track-record of Roman emperors is not that great; Caligula believed he was Zeus, impregnated his sister, and then, when he remembered the story of Kronos devouring his children, cut the fetus out of her and ate it In order to prevent the child from one day overthrowing him, while Caracalla was a sociopath who engaged in a genocidal campaign to wipe out the celts of Caledonia) you get the idea (interestingly, Elagabalus is also said to have invented the whoopee cushion). Roman society was messed up, and for all that people refer to them as civilized and enlightened for the time, I would much rather be a trans woman among the “barbarian” celts than one in Rome.
