A matter of time

It's a matter of time. Someone will invent a fully digital character who appears fully human. And give her the illusion of a real presence on a stage or in a room full of people. I hope they first do that with an animated character -- one who looks animated.

Japan has had an idol singer who is only a screen image for sometime. I think Korea may have one too. How do you tell if a virtual actor is crossdressed? Wait for the shower scene....

= Give everyone the benefit of the doubt because certainty is a fragile thing that can be shattered by one overlooked fact.

Obviously...

A distict lack of talent in Hollywood... As in drop dead sexy young male lead actors.
OR
as has been said, Hollywood see this as a way of making even more money. Oh sorry, I forgot that due to accounting rules that Hollywood use NO Films actually make a profit. Yet there seems no shortage of very expensive houses, yachts and private jets amongst the studio bosses.

IMHO, they should move it all to Vegas. We only need one 'Sin City' :) :)

Animation

A few years ago, I saw a video that explained how they made the Avatar movie.

The actors don't look like the characters in the movie. They wear special suits with dots on them so that several cameras can track their motions. The actors do the running and stuff, including hopping over a sawhorse to emulate jumping over something in the environment. The computer takes that motion and maps it to the 3D models used for the animation.

Also, the actor wears a camera looking at his face so that the computer can map those expressions into the 3D rendered face.

They are now doing that for video games.

So now, an actor needs to be able to move believably and have believable facial expressions, just like it has always been. The difference is that an actor won't lose the part simply because he didn't have the look. At least, that's the case with movies like Avatar and things like video games.

Now, they have moved on to using more vintage images and letting the computers model them. That means that you can no longer believe a video. If the media shows a video of your favorite politician or public official saying something totally stupid, you don't have to believe it.
