If I need something from Amazon, I usually take my browser there via one of the links on BC, to pop a coin or two this way. The various direct links on the BC home page have disappeared, did I miss something while I was away?

No answer for that
but I believe if you click on any book link to Amazon and then proceed to purchase what you desire that it works just the same as clicking the links that were on the side column. As long as you start here and use any click-thru link I believe BC gets the credit

We are currently in the middle of a dispute with Amazon over our Affiliate Status and the content of the BigCloset. Durring this dispute we have removed all of our affiliate links temporarily, but we are working on an alternate method should we not win our appeal.

Removing Amazon associate links
We are in the process of removing the Amazon associate links on BigCloset because our affiliate status has been closed due to content issues. We knew about the issues and Amazon let us continue for years before finally enforcing their rule on affiliates.
Don't worry overmuch about it. We're working on a way to continue our relationship with Amazon through our DopplerPress website.

This does not affect our publication of books through Kindle.

Seems Hypocritical
Seems rather hypocritical to me, considering the content they carry, and that is not just the books. But I would not want to point that out to them as an author or publisher, as it could be detrimental to selling through them. And it is not like that kind of reasoning and double standard is uncommon unfortunately.
They are a international-mega
They are a international-mega-corp, Hypocritical ways are how they all do things. These companies always have these strict rules set in stone in their contracts and EULA's but they rarely follow them. Then something happens somewhere and they start enforcing parts or all of it on everyone. Trying to figure out what rules to follow is like trying to sift through sand.
"Cortana is watching you!"
So
They're willing to take a profit by selling the same types of stories that BigCloset publishes, and profit from readers coming from your site, but withhold remuneration to you for sending paying customers to them? You publish the same type books they do and they deem this site undesirable? Seems to be hypocritical.
We have been throwing around
We have been throwing around the same sentiment...
