Harry Anderson, best known for playing the judge on the TV show "Night Court" has apparently passed away at age 65.
I loved the show, and it had one of the earliest sympathetic portrayals of a trans person on network television.
I hope he's doing goofy magic tricks in Heaven.

RIP to a great guy
He was always entertaining and made you like him no matter the role he was in. It was a shock to see him in "It" and have him play against the lovable nice guy but then see that there was a reason why he was that way as the film developed...

Not just that character
I loved the way Anderson dealt with any of the wacky people called up before him. Many who went on to have great careers. For example, few remember that Night Court gave us Brent Spiner ( Data on Star Trek the Next Generation ) in one of the most delicious and funny characters in all of television history. His dead pan delievry set him up nicely for the role he was most know for, an unemotional android in a sci-fi series.

I loved Harry Anderson's wit in Night Court, but I forget the transperson.

It was in Season 3. Dan met up with an old buddy, who transitioned to female. Dan was unsure how to deal with her and slowly came around, showing a rare soft side to his personality. It wasn't groundbreaking, but it was touching for all of the right reasons.

65? Didn't think he was that much older than me...
Umm, yeah, right, I'll be 58 in December, which makes him just seven years older than me...
Which means I was right about not thinking he was that much older than me, I just don't think of my self as being as old as I am.

Harry Anderson taught tolerance and acceptance
The news of Harry Anderson's passing has left me profoundly sad. In his role as Harry Stone, he was really playing himself and it showed.
I was drawn to Night Court because of Harry Anderson's portrayal of Judge Harry Stone. Harry Stone was very idiosyncratic and knew it. He accepted himself, and didn't take himself too seriously. At the same time, he was profoundly understanding and respectful to the people in his courtroom, especially the people brought before him for arraignment. The character of Harry Stone was a role model for acceptance and tolerance and because Night Court was a comedy, it taught those lessons subtly and in a non threatening manner.
I grew up in a community where conformity was prized; one was expected to accept the social norms and learn her/ his place and role in society. As someone who has never been able to put on a persona and pretend to be someone I'm not- even momentarily, the most important lesson from Harry Anderson and Night Court was in the way the character of Harry Stone showed that you could be true to yourself and succeed. I needed and appreciated the moral support at the time and still do today.

I am truly am sad to learn this. I loved the series and I rather wish that they would bring it back for new viewers, plus us who watched previously.
