OK, try this one on for size:
In a room, on a bar, sits an ice cold cup of soda, half full.
An Optimist walks in, sees it, and thinks, "Aah. The glass is half-full. It has the potential to be quite refreshing."
A Pessimist walks in, sees it, and thinks, "Rats. The glass is half-empty. There's not enough in it to quench my thirst."
A REALIST walks in, takes one look at the glass, and screams out, "OK, who's the wise guy that drank half my pop?"

Better
Better to be an optimist by temperament and a pessimist by policy: check to see that is really is water before drinking it.

= Give everyone the benefit of the doubt because certainty is a fragile thing that can be shattered by one overlooked fact.
...and, contrary to the what
...and, contrary to the what is often claimed, an actual Engineer walks in, and says "That glass was built with a nice, safe margin of error."
Who Spat In The Glass?
Now that's a realist!
My question is...
Who was the wise @$$ that put soda in a beer glass?
We the willing, led by the unsure. Have been doing so much with so little for so long,
We are now qualified to do anything with nothing.
Then the hopeful person walks into the bar
and says,
"Ok guys, I see you started without me. Who's round is it coz, it fer sure ain't mine?"
Then he ducks to avoid flying missiles from the other three.
