I guess I'm lucky. 13 years ago I fell from a ladder and broke my right knee, chipped the bone on my left elbow and cracked an undetermined small bone in my right wrist. I got off with one surgery, well two consecutively while on the operating table. But the recovery is still ongoing. We're having one of the worst winter storms I can remember here (I've lived here for over 60 years) and my knee is telling me all about it.

Even when the weather is good, I can't stand around without my knee stiffening up. I can't lock it back like the left knee so just standing cramps the muscles.

However your advice stands... watch out for the ladder...
