True story. When I was in elementary, I went to the principal and asked to be promoted to the next grade. Trying to give a reason why I shouldn't, the principal gave me a test equal to what that grade would get. I passed it. Then he gave me a test for the next grade. I passed it. Finally, he gave me a test given to university students, and I failed. When I realized they weren't going to let me skip a grade, I bawled like a baby, saying I had been trying to catch up to my brother, who was 2 1/2 years older than I was.
40 something years later, i still haven't caught up to him.

I have always thought since my days in school, that if you 'pass' a test on a subject. Especially in junior high or high school. That subject is DONE and a waste of time to keep wasting time in or on and TAX dollars on repeating
Then take that time and funds, then work on the students 'weak' parts and move them on a grade or two OR more!
I truly think we waste so much time in that repeating the same stuff over and over. As some 'get it' the first time?

the problem was
while I was really smart in some areas, I was really behind in others, especially my social skills, and they didn't want to set me up for failure by putting me with older kids. Of course, the next year, I started seeing "the bastard" and things went downhill ...
for some 'School' is just not the right place to learn
but the system makes us have to endure it. Only now are educators starting to realise that lumping us all together can actually be detrimental to mental health.
I was so bored at school when I was 10 or 11 that I just lost interest. As a result, I was put into a stream what was just above remedial.
For the next 4 years I just turned up, did the minimum and tried to keep my head down despite the endless bullying.
I left school at 15 and got an apprenticeship as a Toolroom Fitter. The parting words of my form teacher was, 'good luck with that. You are hopeless at Maths'.
Six years later I had a degree in Mech Eng and was working designing the Avionics System for a fighter aircraft. School was just not the right place for me as it appears it was not the right place for you. We, and many of those like us are the square pegs that the system wants to force into round holes.
I hope you can smile as you think back to that episode and count it as one of lifes little ups and downs that we all encounter.

Dorothy, I love you like a sister, but sometimes, I just have to question your judgement- and sanity. You've been living in your brother's shadow for so long, trying to live up to some self-imposed, ungodly standard, that you can't see what a remarkable LADY you truly are! You're witty, graceful, VERY compassionate and empathetic, and just a little self-effacing. You've passed life's test with flying colors, so why are you content to be just a dim shadow of something so completely and utterly unobtainable/ YOU ARE NOT YOUR BROTHER. You never have been, and you never will be. You are YOU, and I'm honored that you have chosen to share your life- and your friendship- with someone as undeserving as me.
