W.H.O. Weighs Dropping Transgender Identity From List of Mental Disorders

This of course raises the issue of how it should be categorized, and even what it should be named. An ICD (International Classification of Diseases) code is necessary in most cases to get medical treatment billed, so it can't simply be left out of the next version of the ICD. (ICD-11, May 2018.)

The proposal would not take transgender out of the codebook altogether, but would move it into a newly created category: “Conditions related to sexual health.”

Yes, I saw that. But there

Yes, I saw that. But there does seem to be some controversy about that choice.

It's a Two Edged Sword.

By the dual forces of luck and profound ignorance, when I came out and did my transition, it was considered a mental disorder, which was insulting, but also made me eligible for all sorts of benefits. Oddly, GID was not taken out of the DSM as a disorder until I was old enough to get regular Social Security Benefits. So, I was treated very nicely in most ways.

In the last year or so, I have come to wonder about it all. In 2004, being T was social disaster. In the late 80's, when I was first diagnosed, no one knew what the hell GID was, and those who transitioned were simply assumed to be gays that liked dressing as women.

There are as many types of T folk as there are folk methinks. It runs the gamut from the more sensible, occasional crossdresser to those who are deluded enough, as I am, to try to be full on women. And the whole field of study is still evolving.

So, this re-designation may help us make more inroads into regular society, but will likely end financial benefits here in America that are often necessary for survival.
