I think the local community
I think the local community response showed their true feelings showing up at the local library. Outsiders come in and try to force their beliefs on everyone. My only comment is that for a supposedly christian group, the outside group certainly don't display it.

How about
'Religion is a mental illness, it's sufferers having delusions of some old man in the clouds who causes huge problems for mankind unless they show regular obeisance and create wars in his name, especially against unbelievers; then say they are godly for doing so.'
Angharad
You don't have to be crazy to be religious!
Since religion is practised by major sections of the population all over the world, I don't think you can claim it's a mental illness, any more than love is a mental illness. Both make you behave totally irrationally.
Religion should be fairly harmless, if not beneficial to society. The problem is, it's not just harmless people who are religious. Many evil people find the strict rules of religion a way of justifying their evil. Even if religion didn't exist, they could find plenty of other excuses.
The problem isn't religion
It's just another vessel for absolute power to corrupt absolutely.
I think it's hilarious...
That people use the argument about DNA. But they don't even realize that people like Jamie Lee Curtis have xy DNA...I also think its funny that they point out that johns hopkins lists transgender as a mental illness, and produce an article that is over 20yrs old as proof. Hopkins changed their stance on that a while ago.
Repeating only the parts they like
Be it for or against, too many make their judgement on what others have told them. Sadly, we do the same without knowing the person making the comments. Words of vile filth come our direction we are only too quick and too willing to do a volley return adding some of our own.
They judge transgender by the comments of those around them, having never read or done the medical scientific research. But then even the medical fields show their own hateful bias and it is published with streams of letters following the names. We automatically think those of higher learning are super intelligent fair minded and have no personal skin in the game. And they have all the letters to prove it. Sadly, I have become biased myself. Pride in one's own accomplishments is one thing. Using that degree to push one's own agenda is another. Books and learning does not make one intelligent but supplies the pieces to assemble a degree of intelligence provided one is willing to weigh "all input" against all the equations.
Thus we come full circle as to Christians who if they own a bible they only carry it to church on the one Sunday out of the month they attend to prove they are "real" Christians. They wouldn't know what Christian is unless the preacher explained it to them from the pulpit. And then it's the minister's opinion as they regurgitate it if someone asks. Prayer is when they get desperate for help. No need of bothering Him if you don't need Him.
We finally come to transgender and what does anyone think or accept. For or against I'd venture to say 99% of those expressing opinions have never done research on the subject. God forbid if they picked up one of the biased medical journals proclaiming trans a mental disease. "Ah Ha! just as I thought and this book proves it." End of research. Time to share all I know with the rest of the world as I spread the word medical science says those people are sick. My preacher says all they need is laying on of the hands and healing from God.
The only mentally sick people I know are the ones locked into their own little bigoted hateful spoon fed knowledge. Be it about trans or any other subject. I'm not talking about the ones whose mind can't process in and out thought in the real world. Although I guess it would describe the bigots and haters too.
Just when you thought you knew it all, open your mind and you will realize you never even begun..., yet.
God made a body and let you use it anyway you pleased. I believe with all my heart and soul He wants us to learn until we feel like we are going to burst and then learn more. And when we learn the truth, try to filter it, test it, try it. If it passes every test then possibly it might be the truth until more knowledge comes along with more tests to try it against.
I still believe the world is flat. How about you?
always,
