Mom sighed. "You have to get that operation soon," she said. "You really forget that you're not a girl, don't you?"
"Yeah," I admitted glumly.
Tuesday night at dinner Dad announced that our internet connection was up. I was halfway out of my seat before Mom stopped me. "First, finish your dinner," she commanded.
"Sorry, I wanted to catch up on email."
"Remember the rule," Dad said. "The computer goes off at eleven."
"Which is only eight o'clock in California," I whined.
"You'll have to make do," he said, smiling. "And don't forget about your homework."
"Oh!" I said. "Changing subject: can Suze come for a sleepover in two weeks? Friday, the 22nd?"
Dad stopped his fork in midair. Mom got a strange look, and — after a long pause and a quick look at Dad — she said, "That's just before Christmas. Won't her family miss her?"
"Her family's Chinese. They don't celebrate Christmas. They've never even had a Christmas tree. Please? It's just one night, and then on Saturday morning she'll go home. Can she come? She never gets out of her house, and that's the earliest we can do it."
Dad and Mom looked at each other, and Dad cleared his throat. "Where would she sleep?"
"In my bed, with me... oh!" Now I saw the problem.
Mom sighed. "You have to get that operation soon," she said. "You really forget that you're not a girl, don't you?"
"Yeah," I admitted glumly. "I didn't even think about that part... but if I wear something that kind of hides everything–" I guestured vaguely.
Dad interrupted by putting up his hands. "Could we not discuss lingerie at the dinner table, please?" His face was red.
Lingerie? I echoed silently.
He went on, "Also, there's the fact that you are a boy, at least where it counts. How do we know nothing's going to happen between you and Susan? How am I to know that's not what you have in mind in the first place?
"Even if it's *not* what you have in mind, you seem to have a talent for letting things happen... in a big way! Can you imagine what sort of disaster we'd have on our hands? How could we possibly explain to her parents?"
"It won't happen," I said, my face burning. "Nothing will happen. She's a girl." That statement seemed to explain everything, at least to me, but Dad's expression hadn't changed. So I went on, to try and make him get it: "So... I'm... She... It's not... I'm not... I don't... I'm..."
Why was I getting so tongue-tied? It was really pretty simple. I stopped for a moment, took a long breath and let it out. "I like boys, Dad. I don't like girls that way. I just like boys."
It was like (conversationally) dropping a stone into a well. I just let what I said go, and sat there waiting, listening, for a sound to come back... or at least for Dad's *face* to say something I could understand.
Mom was waiting, too, to give Dad a chance to respond. She, at least, was smiling, and at last she spoke.
"Boys, mmm?" she buzzed. "And boys like you, too, don't they?"
I raised my eyebrows. Could the tide be turning?
Dad was blushing, and started busily re-arranging his plate and fork and knife. Mom and I sat in silence until he stopped and looked up.
After he took a few tentative breaths, he quietly asked me, "Have you ever fantasized about Susan? Wondered what she looked like naked? Anything like that?"
"No!" I said, laughing.
It never occurred to me until he asked, but it was true: "I don't think I've ever thought about any girl that way."
My parents looked at me and then at each other. Then Mom shrugged and said, "They could each sleep in their own sleeping bag..."
My face lit up.
Dad considered, chewing. "That might work," he said. "But one condition: you have to tell her that 'skin condition' story that we used for your gym class."
"Oh, Dad!" I groaned.
"It will cover a multitude of sins," he explained.
"Yeah, but it's gross!" I protested.
Mom gave me a look that said, Let it slide for now — I'll talk to your father later. I was surprised, but gave her a secret smile in reply.
Then Mom said, taking Dad's hard-line tone, "You have to get changed in the bathroom or in that little changing room."
"Yes, no changing together, or showering together, or sleeping together, or anything like that."
"And you have to leave your bedroom door open."
I was about to wail a loud what!? but they dropped a heavy ultimatum on it:
Mom said, "It's that or no sleepover."
Dad said, "Take it or leave it."
I took it. I took it and tried to not resent it. At least Susan was coming. I had to keep reminding myself of that.
The next ten minutes of the meal passed in silence, except for the sounds of eating. I know it was ten minutes, because I was watching the clock.
At last, Mom, without raising her eyes from her plate, said, "You know, I was thinking... what you said about Susan's family never having had a tree... and I thought: What if we put the two sleeping bags on the rug in the living room, next to the Christmas tree? We can put some padding underneath them, of course..."
My mouth opened in a silent oh!
"... but it might be nice for both you, and you could leave the tree on all night."
"That would be perfect!" I enthused.
Dad, on the other hand, looked at Mom and kept on chewing. I still couldn't read his face.
Mom continued, "That way, you don't have to leave your bedroom door open — which would seem odd on a sleepover — because your father or I could see you from the top of the stairs, if we really needed to..." She said that last part in a way that suggested that there really was no need.
Dad nodded, swallowed, said, "That would work."
A big smile broke out on my face.
Then Mom rounded it off with this: "And since the girls would be so easy to, ah, supervise, I think we might spare Marcie the embarrassment of the skin-condition story."
Dad turned quite red and cleared his throat. "I guess so," he admitted. Then to me he said, "I'm sorry, kiddo. You understand, don't you, that the point wasn't to embarrass you, it was just that I — ah — the —"
He wasn't quite sure how to go on, so Mom put her hand on his arm and said, "It's okay, honey. She gets it."
I smiled and nodded and said, "Thanks!"
After dinner I tore upstairs and jumped on the computer. There were emails from everybody in Tierson! As I was reading and smiling and laughing, I became aware of a cute pony-tailed head looking over my shoulder. I turned to look, and it was Misty.
Who else could it be?
I still don't know why she doesn't scare me, or freak me out, or creep me out.
It's probably because she's just like any other girl from school.
Except that she's dead and can walk through walls... and can never change her outfit.
Aside from that, though, she's pretty normal.
"What 'cha doing?" she asked.
"Looking at my email," I replied.
"Email? What's email? Can I watch?"
Having her watch slowed me down, but I didn't mind. She had a bazillion questions. Thankfully, she didn't ask what the internet was, or how email worked. Once she got the idea that it was like ordinary mail (put in the address, hit SEND and away it went!), and that the "letters" were squeezed in and out through the "telephone" wire, her technical curiosity was satisfied.
"It's like a fax without paper," she concluded.
"I guess," I replied. Then, realizing that her idea let me off the hook, I said, "Yes, yes, you're right."
But then, once those technical details were out of the way, I had to tell her about life in Tierson, and who my friends were. One email that was new to me was an old one from Jerry (sent before we broke up): it had a link to the photo of the two of us at the mall: him in his Giants shirt, me in my Dodgers shirt, and his arm was around me.
And, by the way, my breasts are not as big as they look in the photo! Was it the shirt that made them look that way? Had I been photoshopped?
I made the mistake of asking Misty, who with casual, ruthless honesty confirmed that, yes, my breasts were much smaller in real life than they were in the picture (thank you very much!) and what in the world did "photoshopped" mean?
It turned out to be a shorter explanation than I expected. I said, "It's a program for manipulating pictures–" and she cut me off.
"Okay, okay, I get it," she said. "But... with this internet thing, can anybody see that picture? Or only people who have your email?"
"Anybody in the world," I sighed. "They can even buy a poster of it and hang it on their wall. See?"
I showed her how the online shopping cart works, and as I did a warning bell went off in my head. I hope I wasn't letting myself in for a world of trouble with this. I didn't want a ghost-girl going on a wild internet-shopping spree while I was at school or asleep.
"You didn't see my password, did you?" I asked her.
"Your what?" she asked.
"Never mind."
Misty went back to studying Jerry's picture, and nodded. "He looks nice."
"Yeah," I sighed. "He is nice."
She turned to me with a cute little smile and said, "Can I ask you something?"
Hoo boy! I thought. Here comes some embarrassingly intimate question about me and Jerry, like whether we ever–
Misty gave a silent laugh, then asked, "Can *I* get an email account?"

and now for 'Ghost Mail'

Y'know...
My mother still doesn't know what the "G" stands for when she's seen me on my GMail account...
Haha
A ghost with an email account?? How cool, but would she actually be able to type?? This story is getting better. Wonder if she knows Marcie isn't what she appears to be.

The Sleepover Bit Was So
Much fun seeing the logic of her Mother saving face for Marcie and now Misty? What would she do?

She Can't Get Suze Pregnant
I take it that her father does not know about the mishap in the hospital? Marcie is very much thinking like a girl.
Hugs,
Jenn
I guess I wasn't thinking...
I kind of forgot, too! Thanks for noticing.
I'll have to think about how to fix that... the father's concern would be that Mark would make a move on Susan.
Here I'd thought you'd ...
...done that on purpose.
I'd assumed that was the father's concern. And I figured his wife had neglected to tell him about the extra opperation. A bit that might well never come up in conversation.
Also, a good reason for mom to turn the conversation to safer paths. :-)
Oh well. Call me a gullible reader.
Annette
Oh, right!
I just went back to see... thinking that you meant that the father had mentioned pregnancy, so I was a bit embarrassed.
Sometimes I regret Marcie's orchiectomy, and wish I could go back and do the whole thing over again, to avoid the horrible misunderstandings. I mean (1) that Mark was forced to be Marcie -- which he wasn't, and (2) that Marcie's mother is some kind of cruel, clueless idiot for allowing the orchiectomy to happen -- which she isn't.
Every time someone suggests either of those things, I want to tear my hair out, but I realize at the same time it's my own fault.
At the time, I had no intention of writing any more about Marcie Donner than "Rules Are Rules" and I had no clue about intersexed children. I was only interested in seeing how far Marcie could go, more or less by luck and accident -- but always with her implicit wish to be a girl.
Maddy Bell had just finished book four of her Gaby stories, where Drew gets into yet another horrible crash. Now I love the Gaby stories, but there is always this element of never pulling the trigger, if you know what I mean...
Anyway, I'd been wracking my brain for a month, trying to come up with a way that Marcie could lose her testicles -- remembering that this was a FARCE, not wanting anything violent or harmful -- which, of course, is just insane and impossible, I know.
Still, I thought that THAT was what was coming in the Gaby stories -- Drew in the hospital, and sorry Mr and Mrs Bond, but it has to be done -- and I was determined to get there first.
And that's how it happened. That's why Jane and Denise's teasing goes on so long at the beginning of RAR, and why Marcie's mother doesn't notice what's on the consent form I mysteriously put in her hands.
If I come up with a way to fix it, I will go back and rewrite at least those parts of RAR, but first I need a better solution.
Not necessarly a big deal
A modest change would likely do.
A few lines here and there at that critical chapter or even earlier would re-enforce the orchidecomy was an accident. Maybe another was in the hospital for that opperation,a TG or cancer victim, had the same name and his papers got mixed up? The parents were sure pissed off once they found out, only Marcie was happy but then from what the confused fortune teller is saying.
I think/hope Marcie is intersexed and in fact is really a genetic girl. Marcie's rapid responce to the herbs suggests she really is entering pueberty as the girl she really is; the herpss should not have stimutate breast growth that much ofr fast unless they were charged with magic. I was mildly suprised when the emergency appendectomy did not result in emergncy SRS to open a closed off vagnial opening and tha pain was from menstration that had no place to go. Maybe we need a few hints that Mark was repressing his female side? But still that may not be a problem as kids are fairly asexiual until they begin to mature.
But then modern appendecomies are often done with a scope and maybe they didn't notice the girl bits. I'm no expert on anatomy but I think the apendix is high enough and to one side that unless they went looking for it, in the tiny surgical field of a scope they might not have spotted immature but now maturing female sexual organs. Everybody is a little different than the *model* of a human and if her organs are positioned unusually ... Then there always is the supernatural rout to true girlhood, AKA as a gift from the dead twin for helping her.
It's just Marcie is so plucky, so selfless that for her to have anything other than the fairypricess ending seems unfair somehow. It need not be that *Disney* ending, the story and your muse have an internal logic you are following. I suspect Marcie will find a way to be happy no matter what.
I am having way too much fun following this.
John in Wauwatosa

Agree about Gaby
... Maddy is refusing to pull the trigger. I suspect for two reasons:
a) She thinks it could run as long as Tuck so she is pacing things a lot slower.
b) Having Drew/Gaby choose one path or another will piss off at least some part of her readership. The TVs hate the idea of 'yet another boy thinks just because he looks like a girl that he must change' story or TG/TS leaning folks who thinks it is weird that Gaby's adventure has no direction period and would make no sense not to be a girl a this point.
As a result, her story is in a bit of a holding pattern with Gaby going through her regular having to dress as a girl/being thought of as a girl and resenting it cycle ( hmmm bicycle, maybe ;). ) Sorta like being in a roundabout and not being able to leave.
With her move over to Germany, you would think this is a good point for Drew/Gaby to start edging towards the exit lane of this decision point and do something. However, if her decision is for Drew to become serious about becoming a boy, well, that story will come to a screeching halt in no more than four chapters I think.
Anyway, back to your story - I agree with another poster that it would be hard to believe that Misty does not realize Marcie has a penis. Unless, of course, Misty only really sees Marcie's essential self and has an implicit understanding.
Kim
but Misty would have to look!
Misty would only know Marcie's status if she was watching while Marcie changed or was in the bathroom.
I think Marcie already told Susan that Misty "blanks out" some times -- she's not always on, not always aware.
Remember that Misty fairly naive, and is the product of a Catholic high school. Even without that, I don't think she would be curious to watch another girl change clothes or shower. At least, not in THIS story!
... Do you have any idea...
how contradictory those two terms are? Meaning, of course,
"fairly naive"
and
"product of a Catholic high school"
Worry
Worries don't have to be COMPLETELY rational. :) Dad may not WANT to think it through.

A ghost with an e-mail address...
I wonder who she'll correspond with...
Guess dad had a few surprises this episode. :-) Is mom really comming around? It certainly SOUNDED like it. Wow!
Looking forward to more! Thanks,
Annette
Coming around?
Her mother was never against her. It was only in comment-world that Marcie and her mother didn't get along.
I didn't see her mother as ...
... AGAINST her. But, I did see her do things that on more than one occasion made it appear she forgot she had a daughter (at least to this reader).
What I was trying to say about comming around was proactivly treating her as second female in the house. She's mostly been there since they've gotten to NJ but it's seemed at times that she's had typical mother-daughter difficulties in understanding how her daughter has different interests.
Nothing I've seen have had me believeing that Marcie's mom or dad do anything but love her. (Maybe they don't understand her/her decisions/actions but definitely they love her.)
Annette
Misty
Who knows, maybe she won't even need a key board, or even a 'puter. Maybe Misty will come to the sleepover?

Me Too
I was hoping too, but I guess sometimes it's better to imagine how a person looks. I'd rather she'd be wearing a Giant's jersey anyway, Arecee
So who would Misty write to
So who would Misty write to with her e-mail account? She would need to have the e-mail address(es) of others wouldn't she? Or maybe Marcie can teach her to "reach out and touch someone" on the internet. Scary huh? J-Lynn
I have never seen
Marcie's parents as anything but protective and at times not quite understanding her position. While thinking as I read this, she can't get Susan pregnant anyway, her parents were obviously mindful of her little problem, and didn't want it exposed physically or metaphorically.
As for Misty wanting to use the internet, would that make her a ghost writer, and if she walks through doors and walls, might she have problems with a keyboard?
Keep it coming Kaleigh, another good episode.

I am liking this
thinking of this i agree. It is quite funny and I wonder who she might want to email. Can she use a keyboard, will she have to ask Marcie to type for her. IF it ever happens then what will happen. Will Marcie be accused of pulling of a prank posing as Misty. Or perhaps since she looks like a normal girl not a ghostly mist, she can use her hands if she wants to. I guess these are all questions we have to wait for future installments for.
kaleith, very very good work. highly entertaining.
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
For the TG community it is almost given that they will be misunderstood. Many non TG don't even want to try to understand. Many TG don't even understand themselves. Education and open minds are important keys to understanding,

She is all girl
No, Marcie is all girl, but sadly she isn't female yet. Yeah, I know, but to say "You really forget that you're not a girl..." illustrates there isn't a real understanding of what it is all about.
Not the same as the first
There is something lacking, or something not quite right. This storey doesn't have the same feel to me as the first. Maybe it feels a bit more contrived, not the freshness and spontaneousness of the first. Perhaps it is the tarot reader (stating events clearly rather than in the true vagueness of tarot reading; perhaps the tarot woman saw Jack and Eden together kissing although that wasn't stated in the storey) and the ghost thing.
I read the episodes, but not because I have this real interest to see what comes next. Probably more to do with the first part than this part of Marcie's life.
Not the same as the first...
... but I on the other hand am enjoying it more. Perhaps because there IS more meat and it's less a RACE to see how many off the wall (okay on the wall) things she can manage to make Marcie do...
An author RARELY pleases ALL of his/her readers. In this case, perhaps the fact she's keeping some people (yours?) interest up, even though it's not "just like" the last story is an indication of her skill at writing an engaging story and/or creating engaging characters.
Just a thought.
Annnette
True
I do come back to read more :-). It isn't just the zany antics of Marcie in the first or the lack of them in the second. It really isn't tangible enough for me to clarify exactly what. While I am reading the second, I am not enjoying it as much as the first for some reason.
Something about farce
The playwright Alan Ayckbourn once said, "When you write a farce you use up a lot of material."
I don't know why I didn't believe him, but now I know that he's right. It's not that hard to be funny, just ordinarily funny, but farces take a lot out of you.
I spent so much time thinking up crazy things for Marcie to do, that by the end of RAR I felt like I was shooting blanks.

Misty ?
I just realized that 'Misty' is such a groaner of a name for a GHOST! Ya know, Misty ? Ghost ? Not so bad as Sandy Beech though *snigger*.

The name Misty
Not as bad as Bertha Twins, either.
And I was so proud of that name, Misty Sabatino!
Ghost Mail ?
I guess it comes from being on the net from it's beginning, and bbs's even before that that peaked a memory of an email client called " Ghost Mail", and I do have a terminal program called GhostComm from back in the BBS days!
A simple google search brings us: ta-da " Ghost Mail!

Appears to be dead.
Ghost Mail appears to be dead and I went to quite a few websites. No server appears to have the proggy. I think it worked by using some of the mail servers like geocities to send mail through their mail server so your IP wouldn't appear in the header. A thread on a message board seemed to indicate they caught on and started blocking the proggy at the mail server level. Since the proggy could no longer be used to send emails, it died of natural causes, lack of interested users.

This would put a whole new meaning to ghost writing wouldn't it?
I mean, let's get into the spirit of the thing here. I spectre she wouldn't stand a ghost of a chance, but hey, they'd be all ghouls together wouldn't they?
Sorry, couldn't resist and since no-one else had . . .
What can I say? I don't get out much.

To be honest here, I see two parents trying to cope with a mess
a major move across the USA Ca to NJ
seperation of parents to child
all of sudden out of blue, find out their son wants to be a girl and somehow has breasts but claims never did anything wrong
the boy whom prob was a wallflower to the outgoing girl
the nutering
the seperation of parents when wife went back to CA
the mutiple antics of a girl that most boys wouldnt even attempt specially not their Mark
This is in a 2 month span .... geez only one would be enuff to make a parent crazy.
even in NJ less than 3 days has two more hero episodes
GEEZ they havent had enuff time to digest what's going on and if i'm not mistaken..by DAD's remarks and maybe Mom's ... just what did they think Marcie & Sue were going to do ???
Unless I've gotten wrong info from certain people, Enuch's can't get it up. So worst they could do would be like two normal bodied girls might, aka . lesbian style which rarely a parent would think about in their girls sleepovers ...
NO....I believe parents have a general idea what is going on with Marcie, but they've really not had time to digest it or learn much more than a synopsis of events
Whats even more less funny, I find many TG and LGBT friendly folks in REAL TIME fall into that catagory as I talk or perhaps read someone's comments, that, just never meets reality in more than a surface knowledge.
Well enuff of that - I think Marcie's parents will get better as time goes on. 2. I'm still sticking with my predictions on the upcoming disaster I made a couple chapt ago.
Now I'll go see what our mischievious writer has in store for our next reading (smiles)
