A nice thought,

but it will take a long time to trickle down to us, if ever.

true

but in the us article i saw yesterday or day before, it actually mentioned use for SRS/GRS/GCS or whatever acronym is being used by whomever. THAT is a great sign, but yes it is probably years away.

someone mentioned the glands. i dont think it mentioned if the lubrication glands were part of the new tissue, or if they were functioning correctly.

Bartholin's glands?

Rhona McCloud's picture

If I understand the article it would be applicable to those where otherwise a section of intestine would be used. However there in no mention of whether the patients already had healthy Bartholin's glands to achieve the reportedly satisfactory lubrication

It sounds

like pasting in a new part rather than the cutting that's normally done. I saw it was mentioned in the same area as replacement noses and ears so we have real sculpted living tissue. That is still an enormous breakthrough is not where so many wants and needs for it to be. However, like the article said at the end functioning organs such as animal hearts and livers have been fashioned, but they're not there yet.

A real human heart is being worked on now, but researchers estimated a decade or perhaps more before such might be ready for humans.

We're getting there, if slowly.

They've actually made

They've actually made significant progress at rebuilding kidneys. Currently, the implanted kidney only had 5% functionality, but as the article said, if they can get it to 15% or so, that would remove the need for haemodialysis.

It's not a full 'build' of a kidney, because they use an existing kidney as a scaffold. It's still impressive.

As for the technology trickling down? I'd say that something like this is likely to end up in the TG community faster than you'd expect. It's an existing market for their second "product" (first being windpipes), and would allow them to improve techniques in a non life-critical situation.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

I emailed the clinics

I emailed the clinics contacts for this asking them directly if the would expand the study to encompass a wider variety of patients. Doubt I'll hear back but I'll let you know if I do.

Hopefully my email may make them consider it if they haven't already.

Big hugs.

Wow got a fast response see

Wow got a fast response see below.

Hello,
Dr. Atala answered a similar question from a journalist yesterday and I am sending it to you in hopes that it answers your question:

Q. This strategy could help rebuild the sexual organs in sex change operations ? Men who want to become women, for example ?
A. This technology has several applications. Due to FDA regulations, only one indication can be evaluated at a time and we started with patients born with severe defects.

Obviously judging by the response they have considered it, the only question is when will they will start trials? Hopefully with the success of this trial they wont be long fingers crossed.

Big hugs.
