From WIRED magazine via Huffington Post Gay Voices:
DC Comics has introduced a new lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual (LGBT) friendly character: Alysia Yeoh, the transgender roommate of Batgirl.
Comic fans were introduced to Alysia in "Batgirl" #19, which hit shelves on Wednesday, according to Wired. She is the first transgender character in mainstream comics, and she reveals that she is trans during a conversation with Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) in the pages of the new issue. The character is also bisexual.
May Have to go buy a comic, my first in years!

Alysia
Actually she's been around since the relaunch of Batgirl....I'm a big fan of it :) Though I can't expect a magazine like Wired to know that lol. She's a pretty cool character too :)

I am waiting to see what they do with dynamics between the two. There was only a few pages about it.

It is a long road ahead but I will finally become who I should be.
I kinda gathered
That was the point. This is not a one-off character, this is a canon character that just now came out. Not a limited character with a restricted market but a real character in the mainstream comic.
Of course, like I said I am not a comic aficionado so I have to go by what is in the article.

But they have not touched upon
the many times that D.C. has done a gender switch upon characters or had Jimmy Olsen dress as a girl. Is there a site where classic characters are gender switched or males dressed as a female?

Let's not forget Madame
Let's not forget Madame Fatal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madame_Fatal
She was a man, dressed as a older woman, so he could solve crimes.
Madame Fatal
Reading the provided link, it seems Madame Fatal was a cross-dresser, not transgendered. Different kettle of fish, IMHO.

Depends...
Depends on who's definition of "transgender" one uses... Cross-dressers ARE included under the "transgender" label per the "GLAAD media guide".
IMO - lumping all of us together (with a single term) just adds to the confusion felt by many out there.

I only hope that she doesn't
I only hope that she doesn't end up as a target for the badguys....and when the heck did Barbra become Batgirl again. I liked her as Oracle.
But honestly, I have loved how DC handles some things, like Green Arrow taking a new Speedy, who was a prostitute and had HIV. Then she fought crime, not moped around in the Arrow Cave, or what ever he calls it. The relationship between Maggie Sawyer and Renee Montoya was nicely done too.
The new 52
A couple of years ago DC cancelled and relaunched all it's lines.

I know, I know...
...it's all fantasy and sci fi with super powers and crime fighting. But for once, it's a realistic portrayal of someone who isn't TG because of some chartreuse kryptonite or magic spell, but a real young lady who is making her way in the real world as a trans-woman. This pic just sent me crying, because above all else, even in fanciful worlds with capes and spandex, we have so many heroines who just want to be the person they were intended to be.
Love, Andrea Lena
One must admit,
the spandex is a bonus. :)

Right, Andrea
My thinking was along the same lines. Based on the comic preview I have hopes that this might become a realistic, recurring character. The more mainstream, realistic characters that are portrayed, the more the level of acceptance will hopefully increase.
And yes, Extravagance, spandex is a plus! :-)

So how long till she warns
So how long till she warns this new friend that at any time, a tall, brooding man just may show up, unannounced, wearing all black and having a bad attitude. I mean Batman kinda does what he wants to do. Heck, with how he works, he must know all about this lady already and has passed that info on to Babs.
