I just get really sick of hearing about some disaster or something every few years. Now, I know people who are freakin about the Mayan Calendar thing. Sigh. I just want to shake my head.

Misunderstood and missused.
People are so busy looking for the next big ending they forgot to check there facts. My understanding is not that the physical world is to end but the world of lies hate dishonesty and cruelty is going to be uncrowned by people not putting up with the old ways any more. It speaks of a time of rebirth and renewal, not fear and destruction.
But a distopia is so much more sell-able than things getting better.
Yes I shake my head as well.
With those with open eyes the world reads like a book
I agree, just because they
I agree, just because they disappeared or died before the next calendar was made people think the worlds ending.
Worse is those who make it into television programs to stir the pot more with their inaccurate often guessed "facts" which realistically are are just speculations.
It's the end of an age, NOT the end of the world.
Big hugs

Just more manmade pseudo religous crap
All dates are arbitrary. I don't think it gets mentioned in most normal calendars. They all use an arbitrary starting points and "ending/doom" point.
Even the system that says we are living in 2012 is just a random assemblage of number based on when someone started to keep track of the days.
Nor are these prediction prophesies are ever adjusted for science. Doesn't matter how many hundreds or thousands of years old it it...it was written for the people then. As mankind evolved into future ages, those documents are unchanging and reflecting a way of life that is not conducive to all the changes that have happened over the centuries.
Whatever happens to the world happens...be it massacres or Global Warming....Things would be so much better if there didn't always have to be a bogeyman to scare people with.
Heck just BC and/or BCE are supposed to delineate Before Christ or Before Common Era for the rest of us...we could easily just be on the Jewish calendar.
My favorite explanation
Is shown in this cartoon:
I love that one
and it is so ironic. I have so many calendars that end on the 31st of December. Then my biggest fear was my vacation ending.
If I had my wish, the December 21st would be the time of the rapture. All those who tell me I am evil and wish to control my life would be swept away in an instant to a place they have always wanted to be.
Just think of how beautiful a Christmas present that would make. Congress might even get a budget passed this year.
ahhh, but one can dream.
Bright Blessings,

The Maya calendrical system
The Maya calendrical system and their religion were strongly linked. The link was that the world and their culture went through cycles, and when a cycle ended, another began. There were ceremonies, renewal ceremonies, which sometimes resulted in putting a new layer and face on the active temples, though conquest between the Maya elites was also a reason for the reconstructions. As far as the calendar ending, the cartoon was more right than wrong in that the calendar copy used by the doomsayers was incomplete. Last year excavation of a temple revealed a buried room that was the "office" of the calendar makerkeeper, and though part of the wall paintings on the plaster had peeled and fallen onto the floor, enough remained to show that their calendar and astronomical projections extended well into the next millenium.
I do not know why it is that people are always looking for the end of days. Part of it is religion, much of it must be fear and insecurity about the future because the present seems so uncommonly difficult right now (actually it always does to those living it). It is true that economic unrest and political unrest, warfare and other uncertainties definitely feed on that form of paranoia (or is it longing for the perceived nastiness of the world to just go away?). Sadly, we do have enough goofy people in various countries in positions of power that further bad times could be caused by them. The conservative religions are very dangerous in this regard as they prey on the insecurities to enrich their membership and most importantly, their coffers. So are social movements born out of economic disaster (witness the rise of Hitler and the Nazis in 1930s post WWI Germany coupled with a world wide depression!)
Anyway, no need to worry about any particular date on any calendar. Our future as a species or its end is not truly written on the calendar, nor is it painted or engraved on stone. Now the end of certain social systems/cultures, that can be another matter, but still is the result of continuing changes that have been going on for a looonnngggg time.

Apocalypse No
From what I heard the Mayan Apocalypse has already happened. It was a pretty big deal at the time. It came with horses, cannons, body armor and priests...
"Government will only recognize 2 genders, male + female,
as assigned at birth-" (In his own words:)

The company that makes Oreo's does not pull a Hostess on us...
I think that they are holding the calander upsidedown
The world will end in 5105!
Mr. Ram
The world actually will end in 5105.
We were simply holding the Mayan calendar the wrong way up. :'D
Never mind...
...archaeologists have discovered another Mayan calendar which gives us another seven thousand years or so...
