Got one, sorta
I remember reading this fantasy trilogy about '90. Female author, the first part was something like 'Hall of the Mountain King' Google only gives me Grieg refs and that aint it. Anyway that was a sorta dark prequel, you know Kingdom under siege, prophesies and such. The second set the stage, two princedoms joining forces to save their respective peoples... ah, but the third.. one Prince surrenders to magical forces and is reformed as a princess. Sounds a bit corny but not bad actually, it was the first story I ever read that had a plot like that.
