This was so Jarring ...
You don't know me ... There was a time when I actually tried to sell myself into 24/7 TPE (Total Power Exchange). Thankfully, I was too visible; too public, and yes, too old. I know that folks here understand when I say the unbearable lonliness, and grief, along with the psych drugs groomed me for it. That time is in the past, and I survived.
Now,really being a Muslimah, it is easy to verify that a lot in this story is absolutely correct. However, please do not think that the Bacha is typical of Afghani or Middle Eastern culture. In Portland, Or, it would be easy to find a prostitute, or a gay slave. Still, I think that you could number all of them in less than 4 figures in a Metropolitan area of Millions.
Julie, I don't know when you actually wrote this, or how much you know about me, but I recognize names that I have used in my own stories. No, I am not accusing you of any sort of plagarisim. It is astonishing to me how much research you put into this. Sadly, many authors write about Middle Eastern culture based upon their Degree from FoxNews. It is very difficult to penetrate Muslim cultures. I have not seen or heard of this sort of thing in any of the Masjids I have attended, and I have spent extended periods of time as an American convert to Islam there. It usually takes about 3 months for the evil ones to track me down.
This is unbelievably painful to write about.
I must say that you have done a much better job at describing certain aspects of Muslim Culture than I have. I still have more chapters of "Lt Katia" to write, so ... I did not describe inner Muslim culture because I thought that it would not be well recieved.
The story got so unbearable for me, that I had to skip to the end to see if Marshal got justice. Now I must steel myself to read the other parts if I can do it.
I love your writing.

A relevant book to read!
I have just finished a book by Khaled Hosseini called The Kite Runner.
Beautifully written, well worth reading it for just this.
It's about the life of a child growing up in Afghanistan, from relative peace thru wars and finally the recent Taliban occupation.
Part of the story is about Bacha, young male orphans being bought from the few orphanages and used as prostitutes, dancers, by a society who has no respect/regard for the lives of those of a lower caste!
It is well recommended, 8 million copies sold, 2006/7/8 penguin/orange readers group prize etc.
I hope you have a chance to read it?

Age is an issue of mind over matter.
If you don't mind, it doesn't matter!

Pretty good story.
There are good and bad in almost any culture. Hala should have at least let him bump into his parents.
