The site was up and down frequently today, the problem finally turned out to be a badly behaving server on the same subnet with us at the server farm, not one of our servers. Sheesh!

There's a good chance it was
There's a good chance it was another server on the same network that was running a massive attack on everything around it. I've seen that happen on my servers in the past. The network traffic is so high for the brute force penetration attacks that nobody else can work - and even the attacking machine trips over itself.
I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.
