Information for a story is what I need. I don't want to talk about IED's, guns, bombs or anything like that.
What I need is information about the living conditions of mountain country Afghan people who are touched by the Taliban. We can talk a little about the Burqua, but having worn one, I am pretty much up on that.
What I need is how they get water, cook their meals, what they eat, what the family arrangements are, and how often women and children are actually beaten. Do they have outhouses? How they clean up for their ritual prayers and all that sociological stuff. I am not particularly interested in city folk.
So, what I need to do is get in touch with someone who has actually been there and lived for a while. I thought about Military.com but do not want to cause some vet pain.
Any advice?

You might do some net searching to find aid organizations that do (or did) work there, then contact those organizations to perhaps find some members currently back in the US who would talk with you.

I think the culture of the tribal areas and north-west Pakistan is much like Afghanistan, so information from there would be relevant.

This is an unbelievable story of love and endurance, It gets very heavy from both sides of the picture in wealth and poverty, despair and hope.

Today we only hear about the horrors of war in Afghanistan, but there was a time back before 1979 when things were not always that way. The beginning of The Kite Runner takes place in the early and mid seventies when the main characters Amir and Hassan are still children. Amir and Hassan view each other as the best of friends, even though the latter is the servant to the former. However, both boys grew up with out their mothers and were nursed by the same women, so the book notes that they have a strong bond that can never be broken.
