get a knee brace
the kind that you pull up over your knee like a sleeve. They make a huge difference. And take ibuprophen (i.e Advil) -- not tylenol -- to keep the swelling down.
I actually can't use a knee brace
My knees are not straight, and if I wear a brace, it tries to straighten it, with painful results.

Then get an elastic knee brace.
It'll support your knee, but won't push it where it doesn't want to go.

just the sleeve
I use a neoprene sleeve, that just hugs the knee, keeps it warm so it doesn't stiffen as much and keeps the ligaments from wandering around.
