So here we are again, half way through another month already, where does the time go? But i digress, I mentioned last time that i'd done the cleaning bit with Foxy, the Airnimal, well Friday was time to finish the job. A further bit of cleaning that i'd overlooked, the cassette sprockets, then fit the chain, sort out the brakes, adjust the gears then, after @ four hours work, tape the handlebars et voila, she's finished! There's something quite satisfying when the job is done, its the getting started and unforeseen issues that often fill me with dread.

Of course i've also been out on the 'other' bike, my best bike which itself now needs a good clean and service. Thursday i decided to cross the Severn for a foray into Welsh Wales (there's a Wales in GOC so its worth making it clear!), not a long way in but across to the Usk at Newport. It was comfortably warm but a strong headwind didn't make the ride any easier and the transporter bridge wasn't running so my planned look at the castle was put on hold. A stop for a burger and a cuppa then it was the wind assisted return to the Bridge before cutting back to Bev's Gaff to complete 114km.

Jump forward to Saturday then, a lazy start to the day meant a later departure than usual as i rode the slight tailwind up onto the Cotswolds and across to Cirencester. From there it was a loop through the headwaters of the Thames and down to Malmesbury before taking a laney route back across to Brizzle. I didn't see anywhere that i fancied for a tea stop so other than my 'emergency' banana, i did the 125km without a proper stop or refuel, i was quite glad to get back and collapse in a garden chair for a bit! And it had turned out quite fast, 27+kph on the day so i've still got 'it' whatever 'it' is!

Today i'll be doing some garden chores, Bev wants Moussaka for dinner so cooking that later and i'll fit in a walk at some point. The garden is greening up nicely with the bit of rain we've had this week, overnight so its not affected doing stuff, my flower bed is looking nicely colourfull, the veg is mostly coming along nicely, the fruit bushes/trees are all hinting at a reasonable crop in the coming months. Todays main job is building bean/pea supports, not too onerous, just fiddly.

But thats later, now you can read Whoooo-oooo!, part 20 of Fame - its time for the Hallowe'en party which as you might expect, throws up a few surprises!

I've got a fair bit planned for the comning week, I really will be doing that castle visit most likely Tuesday, I've another bike to fettle, one of Bev's this time and i need to crack on with more writing! Somewhere i'll fit in baking a cake too so its all go, never a dull moment!

I'll have another update on Wednesday but for now,
Tschussie,
Madeline Anafrid

Wind riding

Riding the wind can really get some speed, downside is the return. I’ve been out once on hybrid did ok. Still use my classic mountain most of the time. Top speed on classic is maybe 40kph. Brakes suck but she sure rolls nice.

What I tell people is that bicycling is cheap on gas. For shopping runs makes sense. Good exercise and good scenery.

The other thing I tell them is that the biggest limiting factor to bike riding is how long you can ride on seat. Once your behind gets sore that’s it your done. It’s not legs, distance or speed. It’s how long you can stay on seat.

Doesn’t improve with practice, ability to ignore the discomfort is the key! I’m usually okay up to @ 5 hours, a proper long 8 hour ride and a sore seating area is just one issue lol

I can ride all day at low intensity but turn the dial up and I tire fairly quickly so must of my riding is only about 75% effort level. Managing effort is key to ability to ride long, far and fast, comfort helps but what may be good for a ride to the shops won’t cut it for a long day.
