...I've made a few
which is the meat of todays Gaby chapter, Mistakes.
That's that so what else today? Well my usually 'timetable' for the week has been thrown out by the weather, another Brizzle explorer walk on Monday then yesterday, rather than my planned ride to the seaside I had another walk as the forecast was wet and windy pretty much all day. The net result was that I ended up out on two wheels today instead.
The plan was to have a sustenance stop on Weston (sm) seafront but the route to and from - well I didn't make that choice until I set off! I headed out past Keynsham to pick up the A39 towards Wells which, if you know the area, means climbing over the Mendip and even the 300m or so altitude was enough to get some cloud action - ie, wet! Dropping down to the Cathedral city though the skies cleared, the sun came out and it started to look somewhat jollier.
I toyed with looping down to Glasto' but decided that would keep - I'd have enough miles today without adding extra. the road I took bounced me westwards towards the coast and my first stop, just a breather, at Burnham on Sea, which, if you are a Gabyfan, you will recognise as the home town of Dave Bond and where his parents still live. On a cold January day it was pretty much a ghost town despite a huge expanse of golden sands. Then I set off again towards lunch, still best bit of an hour's riding away, well it was by the time I'd followed the coast up to Brean then backtracked to get to the Weston road.
There were a few more people in the hometown of John Cleese and I decided to have lunch - a bag of chips and cup of tea, sat outside in the sunshine. What could be better? well a bit less wind and few more positive degrees c, but I was entertained by the Starlings who sang for their er lunch, very patient they were too sitting at my elbow waiting for a chip or two. With a raging tailwind and summer bike/fitness Bristol is an hour away, on a winter's afternoon and not taking the most direct route we are talking two so I set off around the headland for a fairly relaxed ride back north.
I made quite good time and indeed in just a little over an hour I was entering outer Brizzle, then picking up the cycle lanes, transited the city centre without incident which is when I discovered the GPS was playing up. I'm still not quite sure what the issue was, it was recording time and distance but failed to capture the route from Weston to Bristol - not the end of the world. Six hours riding, a little over 130km - one of those days you feel you could go half as far again no trouble - I'm not daft enough to fall for that though!
The weather is mixed for the next few days so my riding schedule is toast into next week - oh well, a change is as good as a rest!
See you on Sunday
ciao

Sun and fair winds
Gotta take them while you can. Yoyo weather here, but generally March conditions in January. Pedal on.
