I've often wondered similarly.
I was the middle of 5 siblings. My older brother, born in '45, is 6 years older. A sister was born in '47 but drowned in '48. She wandered out of the house while supposedly napping and fell in the spring house drowning in 4 inches of water. I came along on '51. Photos show me with my naturally curly hair looking like Shirley Temple. My next sister was born in '54. I know I felt jealous of her although I loved her. I always felt I should have been a girl but was forced to be a boy. As an adult I questioned my mom about my early years, about being used as a substitute for my deceased sister. She could not answer. So yeah, I think my transgenderism was fostered by my mom. Unfortunately I've never been able to explore those feelings except in my writing.

My mother had 6 pregnancies. I was number 6. Two of my brothers died in infancy. One due to RH factor and the other due to a malformed digestive track that cause him to regurgitate everything he ate. I was born in 1945, while my oldest sister was ten years older. My mother would have been about 35 when I was born. There is some evidence that women giving birth over the age of 30 have a higher incidence of transgender offspring. This evidence is far from conclusive.
