Well, I don't know how common that is in real life, but I had something like that happen to me yesterday. I had a conversation with a co-worker, in which she ... overshared details about her period.
I hope I didn't come across as clueless in my response ...

My sisters did that a lot as they were growing up just to see me cringe, they still do it just to annoy me. Some people are self conscious and others uninhibited, you may need to set some limits on what you are comfortable talking about. She may not know the limit with you or others and oversharing by accident.
Although to be frank maybe it's a compliment to your feminity that she does that? She could feel comfortable talking to you about it but not others...

Male culture despises weakness so men hide things which should be shared, like the damage experienced in contact sports. To me it is not over sharing if doing so helps create a common pool of experiences that strengthens our commonality which of course helps us better highlight differences that may or may not need to be addressed.
Relative?
I hear many women complain about male 'stoicism' and undersharing. I suspect it's cultural. Boys are programmed from an early age to 'suck it up' and suffer silently. My girlfriends share about things that would drive men running from the room covering their ears. Sometimes it still makes me uncomfortable, but I try to take it as a compliment that they feel comfortable enough around me to share intimate details of what they would just brush off to (grateful) guys as "ladyproblems". While part of my brain may still scream 'oversharing!', I try to keep that reaction to myself and be outwardly empathetic and supportive... squirming only on the inside. ;-)

It is different every time...
For some strange reason I remember what my mom told my sister when (probably) she had her first period... But in the next almost 15 years in the same house with my sister I had never seen any indication of...
On the other hand, I had a coworker who went berserk when on her period... Funny thing is... She will bite the head off her boss, had a head of another colleague for afters, but she almost never were cross with me... And I was sitting closest to her of the bunch...
