I wasn't aware that there was any doubt about it being an attempt to take over the government. Other than the usual diarrhea of lies from the usual suspects.
At this point, to quote someone or other, "every word out of that man's mouth is a lie, including the words 'a', 'an', and 'the'."
And from where I sit, it isn't a matter of short memories among the Republicans, at least the Republican politicians. They were and are all for it. Any who weren't got purged.

As usual, I can not access anything but BBC.
And here we sit, it being 1/3/2025. He'll be sworn in in less than three weeks. There is a lot of idle chit chat about a convicted felon being ineligible to be the American President. I'm pretty sure he WILL take office.

Those in a position to do something about it always seem to acquiesce to the worst outrages. On the other hand, how would they respond to this? Punish aggressive war, genocide, military takeovers, and martial law by chopping the top persons to pieces on national television.

... when it came out a few days ago (we get the 'real' Guardian every morning but I read it on line, too). Arwa's articles are always worth a look.
That Trump is due to be sentenced before he takes office adds to the strangeness. I know in the US some convictions bar the perpetrator from voting (ever?) - is this one of them?

If the law doesn't suit him he'll ignore it but decry anyone else who does so. He is a total hypocrite. liar, swindler and general failure as a human. I think the judge has hinted he would get a conditional discharge although most would prefer he got life. He's so damaged that nothing sticks to him anymore, his baggage prevents it.

The insurrection section of the 14th Amendment provides that two-thirds of both houses of Congress my remove the prohibition. Depending on the proceedings, Congress's certification of Trump's election may satisfy that provision.

are convictions a bar?
Whether a felony conviction is a bar to voting depends on state law. Mr. Trump is a resident of Florida, and I have read that in Florida a conviction is not a bar to voting, but someone who is incarcerated is barred. Since Mr. Trump has managed to run out the clock, and also convince a plurality of voters that he isn't the danger to democracy that the rest of us see, he has avoided incarceration and can still vote in Florida.
The Constitution does not require one to be eligible to vote to be elected President, or to serve. Originally, the only requirements were to have attained the age of 35, be a natural born citizen, and have resided in the United States for 14 years. Additionally, a President who has been impeached and removed from office is disqualified for any office under the United States. The other two considerations are that no one may be elected to the office of President more than twice, and no one having "previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same..." may hold any office. Mr. Trump's supporters claim that, since he was never convicted, or even indicted, for rebellion, insurrection, or sedition, he is not barred. Our current Supreme Court would probably agree with this interpretation.

I doubt I'll live to see the end of this coming term, so after the election I just decided "F-it!". My country wants to go to h*** in a handbasket, so be it.
