I thought I knew about all this. I was wrong and it was a coup attempt which Trump lied his way out of again. Also, it seems republicans have shorter memories than woodlice. How do I know, I'm a scientist.

I wasn't aware that there was any doubt about it being an attempt to take over the government. Other than the usual diarrhea of lies from the usual suspects.
At this point, to quote someone or other, "every word out of that man's mouth is a lie, including the words 'a', 'an', and 'the'."
And from where I sit, it isn't a matter of short memories among the Republicans, at least the Republican politicians. They were and are all for it. Any who weren't got purged.

As usual, I can not access anything but BBC.
And here we sit, it being 1/3/2025. He'll be sworn in in less than three weeks. There is a lot of idle chit chat about a convicted felon being ineligible to be the American President. I'm pretty sure he WILL take office.
Just holding my breath.

Those in a position to do something about it always seem to acquiesce to the worst outrages. On the other hand, how would they respond to this? Punish aggressive war, genocide, military takeovers, and martial law by chopping the top persons to pieces on national television.

... when it came out a few days ago (we get the 'real' Guardian every morning but I read it on line, too). Arwa's articles are always worth a look.
That Trump is due to be sentenced before he takes office adds to the strangeness. I know in the US some convictions bar the perpetrator from voting (ever?) - is this one of them?

He'll do what he always does.
If the law doesn't suit him he'll ignore it but decry anyone else who does so. He is a total hypocrite. liar, swindler and general failure as a human. I think the judge has hinted he would get a conditional discharge although most would prefer he got life. He's so damaged that nothing sticks to him anymore, his baggage prevents it.

Insurrection Clause
The insurrection section of the 14th Amendment provides that two-thirds of both houses of Congress my remove the prohibition. Depending on the proceedings, Congress's certification of Trump's election may satisfy that provision.

I doubt I'll live to see the end of this coming term, so after the election I just decided "F-it!". My country wants to go to h*** in a handbasket, so be it.
