Apart from having to deal with all the other issues and problems in your life, the poor response to the May challenge must temper your enthusiasm to spend your time organising another. The submissions although lacking in quantity(1 3-part story and 4 solos) made up for it in quality and it's a shame that a bigger field and audience was not attracted. More likes and kudos were deserved
Take your time to sort yourself out, most of the authors seem to be beavering away on their usual submissions and, speaking for myself I look forward to the next challenge or contest whatever and whenever it may be.

Contests are Rules Writing
Not sure how many writers on this channel are able to write within story guidelines such as contests. I found it worked at times, other times my best went completely off the rails and to adventures unintended.
Tried working within the http://whateleyacademy.net/ guidelines and couldn't. Thus The Huntress which was supposed to fit in that theme escaped. I couldn't do it.
The contest with the space adventure? Yes it too jumped the rails and is not even close. Started with the best intentions, I lost command and it took off on it's on. It's a futile attempt to try and stuff a story back inside any contest rules or site rules once the story line has escaped capture. I try but it's like herding cats. Believe everyone understands the analogy.

The intent of the challenges and contests is to try and give folks something to write about. If that happens and what they create goes above and beyond the limits of the contest, then I feel like that's an absolute success.

30 days to write
For me, when I respond to a challenge, the real challenge is to get the story written, edited and posted in the 30 day time frame.
I have two stories that have done well in contests. The first there was just something in the wording of the challenge that spoke to my muse and I cranked out a short story that just fit the guidelines. On the second, a story I'd been working on for some time and was nearing completion already fit the bill.
The latest challenge simply left me cold. Leaving my mind blank and dwelling only on the challenge, only resulted in a void. Not all challenges work for all writers. Nor do I think they are supposed to. Challenges are good. They spark a bit of writing that would otherwise not happen. I'm glad for them.

I think the May challenge was great -- I know we've got lots of folks on the site who really know the superhero world. There are others, and I'm one, who don't, but that's just the nature of things. If I can't think of anything appropriate or fun, all I need to do is sit it out, read other authors' cool stuff, and learn something I didn't know. How great is that? There will be other challenges. :D

It's nice to have a challenge. I've been involved in a lot of things but not as much writing recently. So I took this as impetus to sit down and do some work.
I found some nice pictures to use, but they didn't insert properly. :(
