I just tried to leave a vote for Princess And Plague 5 and the screen went blank. I am wondering what caused it? It was just solid white. The "comments" button worked fine.

Same Happened to Me
Bring the story back up and see if your vote was recorded. Mine was (based on the button now saying "voted").
Sometimes
Sometimes when the server gets too many commands at once for the same thing, or for conflicting things, it aborts the loading of the page you requested. When you vote, it ratchets up the vote number and refreshes the page (in essence) and in this case, becasue the server was doign way too much, it aborted the page load up.
It's a common enough error, just refresh the page. Sometimes you will get "The page you are requesting was a form and the information must be sent again...." and so on. Go ahead and let it send the info again, unless you are making a payment by credit card, in which case you might be charged again.

HELP! How do you Vote! Clueless in Florida.
RAMI
I'm probably missing something real simple, but I am not sure how voting is done, and what exactly it means. Other then showing appreciation for a story, does it somehow benefit the author in some other way? Can you only vote for stories posted on the day they are posted? Can you vote for an older story or an early chapter of a serial, even if it was posted a fairly long time ago, that you are just reading now? Sometimes I become interested in a story after the description of a later chapter catches my eye, or I review older stories of an author I liked and missed the earlier story.
Can you vote for more then one story in a given day or time period? If you just read a story is that a vote?
I see information on the lower left hand corner of the Home page talking about voting. When I click on a story I liked, I am sent back to the story that I may have just read. Is that a vote? Again if that is not a vote, how do I do it?
There are stories here I really like, others I like but not as much, some that I don't like and still others that after reading the decription or knowing the author I won't read at all. If I like a story, I may not have the time or feel it necesssary to leave a comment, but if voting is easy, I would do that for the stories that I enjoyed and to give credit to the author.
Please, some simple guidance on how to vote would be helpful and appreciated. I've been voting in elections for over 36 years, and even living in Florida, with chads and all, I have never had a problem voting before.
Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me.

A Vote Indicates You Appreciated the Story
When you are logged in, you can vote on as many stories as you want (new and old) at any time. All you need to do is click on the vote button at the end of a story. Once the vote script is completed, the text at the bottom of the button will change from "vote" to "voted".
More on HOW VOTING WORKS
Rami,
Since you have registered, you can vote.
The VOTE button does not work when you are not registered.
It allows you to vote one time for each story.
It may be that the system updates the whole page when you vote, so it looks as if it is returning you to the story when you vote.
My connection is fast enough that all I see is a change in the vote count, and VOTE changes to VOTED. But you should see the vote count increment.
It looks as if you have the right idea. Do not vote for stories you didn't care for, and vote just for those you do.
But only comments can tell the author how much you like it, and what you liked in particular.
However, I always giggle at the authors who beg for comments. I just try to imagine them getting a comment form every reader.
It would clog BCTS to a crawl, and if, say Angharad were to get a comment on every episode, she'd never get any writing, or anything else done, if she stopped to read them all.
I'd rather she keep writing.

Vote Widet
The voting widget is written in Javascript. If you have JS turned off in your browser, you will see a different version of how the voting behaves. Since the non-JS version has to reload the page, a hitch in your connection can cause some odd behavior.

Dear CBee and Holly
Thank you for your swift replies. I guess I must be having a computer problem, because even when I am logged on I do not see any place at the end of a story to vote. I tried to check stories I have read and stories I haven't read before.
There are no buttons to push, nothing that says how to vote or a vote total.
Perhaps someone out there can help me.
Since the simple solution is not available, if anyone is giving me directions, please go slow.
Thanks.
