Now my grandmother on the other opinion is the complete opposite

Please Elaborate

In what ways are your friends showing support?

What would you like from your grandmother that she isn't doing? Have you always been close to her?

Thanks.

Support

My friends and coworkers are calling me she and her now using my name or an abbreviation of it
My grandmother called it a fetish and my grandmother is the one who raised me

Thank You

Your friends are doing the right thing.

Your grandmother may be defining "fetish" differently than you do. A "fetish" to an earlier generation meant more of a magical amulet. The sexual connotations have been added over time.

"Clothes make the man." It's hard for many to get passed the basic wardrobe differences. There's so much more that many don't want to consider. Your grandmother might be fearful of the danger facing transwomen. She might be worried about the economic disadvantages.

Or, she might be transphobic. Look for the best in her. One of my college friends had parents who each had multiple divorces resulting in him having eight grandmothers. Most of us only have two and we didn't get to pick them.

It takes time

I'm sure it's more difficult for your grandmother since she has been so close to you and probably comes from a much different generation. I am probably around your grandmothers age and have recently began to transition. Some friends are happy for me, some are indifferent and some won't have anything to do with me. I wish it wasn't like that and maybe someday it will be different. Give your grandmother time and hopefully she'll realize it's not a fad or a fetish. My thoughts and prayers are with you. :D

I applaud your bravery in taking that big step and hope to have your courage someday.
