The Bittersweet Christmas
It's been almost twelve years since I wrote this. I plan on including this in the stories I'll be showing my son and daughter-in-law over the next few weeks. I've already sent them another holiday themed story, Christmas Lullaby. For decidedly different reasons, our holiday season will indeed be agrodolce as this coming week will mark our third year without my wife, with only weeks after that to remember the anniversary of her passing.
This story is far from autobiographical, but unlike when I wrote it, I see myself in both characters; lilely owing to the relationship I never had with my father and the continued desire to be for my son what my dad wasn't for me.

Losing a loved one
is hard at the best of times. With COVID, things have gotten a lot more difficult. This will be my first Christmas without my mother around. She passed in July aged 99 and one third. She died peacefully in her sleep which is a blessing.
I don't know how I'll feel on the 25th but hopefully (covid permitting) I will be with very close friends.
My best wishes go to everyone who has recently lost a loved one.

Understand mostly
I may be able to understand the bitter and sweet aspects of the season better than some. This will be the fifth Christmas that my wife won't be here with me and it will be six years at the end of January that she crossed over. I am lucky to have good neighbors and friends where I am even though I now live over 1000 miles from where I grew up.
