The Bittersweet Christmas
It's been almost twelve years since I wrote this. I plan on including this in the stories I'll be showing my son and daughter-in-law over the next few weeks. I've already sent them another holiday themed story, Christmas Lullaby. For decidedly different reasons, our holiday season will indeed be agrodolce as this coming week will mark our third year without my wife, with only weeks after that to remember the anniversary of her passing.
This story is far from autobiographical, but unlike when I wrote it, I see myself in both characters; lilely owing to the relationship I never had with my father and the continued desire to be for my son what my dad wasn't for me.
